OEM and Factory anything has been well thought out with strong considerations to compromises. Nice work, but not "my cup of tea." Sent from my iPhone using A.Aficionado |

Yeah. I've heard that argument before. To each his own. I am not discarding a single factory piece. If I should choose to go back to completely stock, its fairly simple to do so.

I went a little different route using the Martinelli wood horns, JBL 2404 and AP350 to extreme slope crossovers. Couldn't be happier, it was a night and day difference. I almost sold the speakers because of the previous harshness

Another Klipschorn buddy did the extreme slope crossover, I did not hear it, but he claims he can never get the sound he had with the stock crossover (and my Klipschorns-I bought my pair from him)
I have also read about users using PureMusic, 8 channel DACs and 6 channels of amplification with two left for subs, using the software crossover and slopes. Me- I am not smart enough to out do what Paul Klipsch created. I am considering replacing the crossovers with some ALK OEM replacements, but at $600 a shot it better make a real difference. Finally got started on the parts upgrade. Been putting some hours on the new (to me) Esoteric DV-50S disc player as well as removing the Belle center channel and replacing it with a new center, that turned out to be a HUGE improvement. Very soon I will be selling the Belle. So now its time to get the K-horns done.
Original X-over shows no signs of leaking after 38 years of use. But next to the new X-over it does seem a bit dated. The K-horn is extremely easy to strip down. Last edited by TMC; 11-19-2012 at 12:50 PM. |

While I have not put a lot of time into new veneer thoughts, given the enviroment is a theater it will have to be something very dark so it does not reflect light from the projector. Maybe something like black walnut with the right stain.

Cool, what Center and surrounds are you using?

I have Klipsch Belles for both the center and the surrounds. But a Belle in the center position was simply not working out, and I was searching for a replacement that would solve the problems I was having. ~6 weeks ago I had a chance to pick up a B&G Radia CC-400 center channel very inexpensively from a liquidation sale. Still in the original box.
It has 2 - 8" woofers, one on each side, with 2 - 2.75" X 7" planar mid range and 2 - 2.75" X 2.75" planar tweeters between the woofers. A 4 ohm speaker. Planar speakers have a very horn like sound and I cannot get over how perfectly it blends with the Klipsch's. And the best thing, its a wall mount that fits discretely under the screen. Best change I have made in a very long time. The Belle was simply to much speaker for the center position. Even cutting it 12db or removing as much bass as possible at the processor didn't solve it. |
