George.......I am trying to do more of that type of deep listening. There is a huge chasm between listening to music while doing other things like surfing the web or reading AA versus detaching one's self from all distractions for a complete immersion into a musical experience. It isn't always possible but when it can be made to happen being totally in the moment leaves an indelible impression in your mind that remains long after the music ends. It is a reaffirmation of the goodness of life.

Great post Dan. What you described is what we aspire to experience as much as possible. The challenge at least for me, has always been the knowledge that there is "always something better" and that has driven me to some crazy depths of tweaking and expensive buying and selling of gear.

It's good to know that you have arrived at a point where you can simply be immersed in the musical experience without distraction, leading to pure enjoyment of the hobby.

I hope to arrive at that point soon - I'm getting very close and your post is strong encouragement for me!

Mark.......The good thing for me is I have multiple sound system to play with, tweak, upgrade, etc., all without ever touching the studio system. My primary listening is in the studio but I have the opportunity to keep right on playing with other aspects of four other systems. No reason to blow up my computer or leave the world wide web.

That's a key word. From my own experience and that of others I read, the push to upgrade or change something is not objectively necessary always. To mess with one's setup can suggest dissatisfaction, even with a great-sounding setup. Perfection may not exist in an objective sense, but excellence is always possible. And subjectively, perfection is attainable. Some aren't satisfied with either and get on the merry-go-round; some hit a sweet spot and are able to "sit down," as it were, with what they have. You've hit that spot with an excellent setup, and I would be amazed (though not surprised) if you later report any significant changes to your setup not due to equipment failure or some other practical necessity.

Then, there's sheer curiosity (my big challenge). Not necessarily dissatisfied with what I have, I read about some new gear and my curiosity is stirred, in particular if it's getting raves. I wonder if it's better than what I'm using and want to know more about it. If it's something I think I can afford, the curiosity grows to active investigation and maybe even a purchase, because I've talked myself into it. My current tuner, blu-ray player and preamp are a result of that process (there was one practical reason for the BDP change).
