IME the only time SE connections are more musical or transparent are with gear that is not truly balanced, so that the XLR connections incorporate additional circuitry to create or support a balanced signal.

Same here. And to me a "truly balanced" component is one with differential circuitry.

The owners manual on my amps say 120 s/n ration with rca's vs. 124 with balanced. This made my decision a bit easier after going back and forth a few times
