Does the cardboard get musty or breakdown over time from temperature and humidity swings?

Interesting. Here are two (2) three-level 8'x2' shelves that I cut up with one of those 20v saws Ivan mentioned in the tool thread a few weeks ago. We had a couple of nice days so cut the 5/8" plywood into 2'x4' pieces so were manageable to get into the basement with a hand-truck. Cut 6 12' 2x4s in half for the uprights and 12 10' 2x4s to 8' for the stringers. Will use the 20v drill to start screwing everything together tomorrow and get all my boxes (maybe a 100th of Ivan's ) organized along with the rest of our basement, which is also my listening area/work shop area. Amazing how much useless crap one can accumulate living 20yr in one place.
