very interesting find re: made in the USA
I was surprised to see this, but after talking to a manufacturer (Benchmark); specially their parts ordering guy (his first name is Dick) over there, I did some research and came across this fun fact sheet...

Thanks for posting. That report was from August, 2015. Here’s a more recent paper...

thanks... a much longer read. I will get to it when I have the time to digest..
I would think after the most recent administration's efforts to end unfair trade with China, we'd have made progress... not regress. |

Future innovation and thinking outside the box will push the technology beyond the "End of Moore's Law" in 2022.
In 1946, the U.S. government built the first general-purpose electronic computer. It was called ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) and contained over 17,000 vacuum tubes, along with an additional 90,000 bulky components. In 1947 when engineers at Bell Labs invented the transistor. Then, in 1958, Texas Instruments engineer Jack Kilby (who would go on to win the Nobel Prize) invented a way to put multiple transistors on a single piece of material. He used a chip made out of germanium for its semiconducting properties. Not long after, Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor found a better way to build an integrated circuit using a silicon chip. ENIAC had close to 100,000 components. It also covered 1,800 square feet and weighed 30 tons. Today, the Intel processor (made by a company founded by Noyce and Moore) in your computer packs more than 10,000 times that many components — all on a chip less than 2 centimeters square. We have doubled the processing power every few years as Moore predicted but all good things come to an end... Time to enter a new "dimension". Literally. 3-D technology will have to be implemented as shrinking the silicon wafers has pretty much reached the end of the practical road. We have squeezed everything we could from 2-D and now it is time for 3-D silicon. https://www.businessinsider.com/moor...is-dead-2015-6 Last edited by PHC1; 12-16-2020 at 02:31 PM. |

Quote:
During my career I was approached twice by engineers from China wanting help in purchasing technology to transfer to mainland China. In the first instance they purchased about 90% of a silicon wafer manufacturing plant that was being closed due to old technology. We bought a couple of their newest automated pieces of process equipment. The Chinese engineer bidding against us told me at the end of the auction that they 'allowed' us to win the bidding as they hoped we could possibly help them in the future. That was in 1997. In the other instance a couple of years later a Chinese government engineer approached me about our possible interest in opening a joint-venture in China using our technology. Of course, like all such "deals", they would own 51%, or more, and would have access to all our technology. Unfortunately, the current administration's efforts have done very little but raise costs for consumers and cause maximum pain for farmers. Hopefully, the new administration will do something more serious on this front. I won't hold my breathe. But, I will continue to purchase Danner footwear and other made in North America or Europe products whenever possible. There is a portion of the original ENIAC on display at the Moore School building at UPenn (my undergrad alma mater) where it was originally built and operated, with a larger section at the Smithsonian.
