There is carpet, and curtains behind the listening seat with 2' by 4' panels (4 total) on the side walls for reflections. I know what you mean by a black background- my son walked in and said that it was "chill", because it was so quiet.

The living room is off the front hall, so you get all of this reflective sound walking towards it, then step into silence. I can't stress enough how important it is to get the speaker placement right, and to treat the major reflections on the floor and walls. I have Ikea Expedits in each from corner filled albums and books to sort of bass trap and diffuse that area of the room.

It's pretty easy, and doesn't have to be too expensive to get the basics done.

Congrat's Derek.

This is one of the most cost efficient upgrade you can do. Room treatment alongside power treatment have changed my system. I'm punching much higher than my weight

Thanks so much for posting, Derek! I've been wanting to do something like this for over a year now - been dragging my feet for far too long. This is an awesome writeup and I hope to do something similar soon!

It took me even longer to make it a priority. I'd be interested to know how GIK would treat your room because there's already so much diffusion with your bookshelves. Good luck!
