For $500 a used Rega Planar 3 (older style) with an Elys cartridge. This will get you a proven table with a glass platter, the famous RB-300 arm which is worth $500 by itself, and a just ok cartridge. There is the potential for lots of potential upgrades of belts, platter mats, etc.
These are very reliable so a good bet used, and I believe better than anything on offer new in the same price range. I still have mine in one system using a Dynavector cart and it sounds damn fine.
