Serge.......Your comments about the silver versus black finish gave me pause. I have reconsidered my color choice. I contacted Schiit Audio and changed my order to a silver Yggdrasil. I am more partial to the smooth silver anodized finish than the texture of the black matte paint finish. I also think the silk screen nomenclature will have greater legibility on the smoother silver surface. A silver component did not disturb me when I had an Esoteric K-03 installed in the living room rack so I am confident I will be comfortable with a silver Yggdrasil DAC. The performance is far more important to me than the color.

This instance of second thought is one of the reasons I truly enjoy the interplay between members here when we share our ideas. Sometimes a different point of view can cause a person to reevaluate a decision. That's exactly what happened to me after reading your last two posts. I appreciate the introspection your posts triggered. Thank you.

I would also like to report that the customer support at Schiit Audio is first rate. My emails, and there were several, were all answered in a friendly and timely manner. Changing my Yggdrasil to a silver one presented no problems and was handled efficiently. A big thumbs up to the good folks at Schiit Audio.

Dan, I understand your dilemma of wanting to have all the gear in matching black. In this case I think you made the right decision of going with silver. The black paint would also be more prone to scratching and who knows what happens years down the road if it becomes problematic with peeling? I find that placing components that do not match in color up top in the rack makes it aesthetically better but I'm sure you will find the right spot for it and hopefully it won't bother you. Congrats and looking forward to your impressions. Be patient, a few weeks it may not be as liquid and velvety as it eventually gets. At least my Gumby was that way and now it is a pure honey on the ears.

Yeah but the silver finish has a significant brushed texture -- you're really just trading one texture for another. I'd stick with the black if it was available; resale might even be higher there because they're a relatively rare novelty.

The performance of this DAC is VERY good with PCM sources. I mean, seriously good sound quality. A Yggy is certainly a good buy, even if the wrong color. I disliked the Gen 3 USB input, but by all accounts this is now fixed with the Gen 5.

On a certain niche headphone forum/community a couple years ago, one regular bought a Yggy and displaced his K01 (not K01X though) purely on sound quality considerations (and with PCM content being the major priority). Not so sure how much stock I put into that guy's tastes (some, because we both love and run the Stax SR-009 headphones with BHSE amplifier), but he did in fact sell his K01 at a big loss. Of course I know that the build quality of a K01 vs. Yggy are worlds apart -- the K01 chassis provides excellent vibration isolation/damping, its transport is world-class, and its DSD should be absolutely amazing. I've half-heartedly tried converted DSD-to-PCM files on my Yggy, and they weren't inspriring.

Serge.......Yes, I am prepared for a lengthy break-in which seems to be the general consensus among owners. I will energize the Yggdrasil continuously 24/7, and when not listening to it I will feed it a digital signal from the Aurender N100H music server while the rest of the sound system is turned off. In two weeks I should have just over 330 hours on it. That should be a healthy start. I am excited to hear for myself what all the excitement for the Yggdrasil is all about.

Mike......I appreciate your comment on the color. I had a similar thought about the uniqueness of a black Yggdrasil should I ever decide to sell it, but in the same line of thought it could also work against me. Who's to say. At any rate, I think I made the right choice by selecting the silver over the black.

Good plan Dan. In two weeks time of around the clock burn in, you will have a very good idea if the Yggdrasil will fit your system and taste. If it doesn't work out, well, cutting your loses at 5% restocking fee doesn't hurt all that bad. I doubt you will be sending it back.

Dan, really glad to hear you reconsidered your decision and decided to order a silver unit. Personally, I think it looks nicer than the matte black paint Schiit uses, and sometimes a bit of visual contrast in a stereo system can be a nice thing, too.

Regarding burn in, your plan sounds fine, but bear in mind that Schiit has informed me that you do not need to sending a digital signal to it to burn it in; it just has to be on. The fact you can stream via your Aurender is an added plus, but its not necessary for burn-in. I would say when you're in to the 300-400 hour range, that will give you a good sense of what Yggdrasil is capable of; it will contine to improve after that but the improvements will be more of continuing refinement rather than "wholesale" improvements.

best regards,
Stephen

Dan the metal sides to the front glass panels will pick up the silver in the new DAC and look fine together. My N100H is in the silver and looks fine with my Mcintosh although mine are on opposite sides. Most of the time you will just see the front panel anyway.

Congrats on the Yiggy purchase! Now you have me wanting to hear the Yiggy next to the Gumby ...ughhh. Its supposed to be even better than the Gumby, so I'm pretty sure that you're in for a very happy time with Yiggy. Enjoy!

Congratulations Dan! I was eyeing the black Yggy that was available before the Thanksgiving holiday off and on but have decided to wait a bit since I just purchased my XRT-29s and the JL CR-1. The CR-1 is the only silver component in my rack and I wish it were available in black also, and I almost didn't buy one as a result. However now that I have it I'm glad I bought it, and I placed it at the bottom right of my rack and I don't really notice it anymore. Now that I have one silver component it might not be so bad to have another one and just buy a silver Yggy too, although I will probably still prefer black overall.

I look forward to reading your impressions and review once you have received it and have it broken in!
