No kidding. Just a total lack of bass the few times I tried the Nighthawk. IMO, they are very overrated. I just don't understand why people like them so much.

I just got the Bose QC35 II. I’m trying them for a week or two.
First impression is I don’t like how my ears feel with the NC on. Eww. So I leave them off. Very little delay in sound vs onscreen action. I’m typing this on my iPhone 6s Plus and there’s almost no delay in sound with the keyboard sound and games I’ve tried. Bass seems pretty decent. I’d still like more but this along with how clear these sound, it’s not bad at all. The iPhone has an EQ. Only for its own music app though. But it makes small noticeable difference between all the presets. Not much in the bass region but slight. These cans aren’t nearly as loud as the others I’ve tried. I turn up my iPhone max volume and could take a bit more. So maybe an amp would be good but only if I noticed a good sound and bass improvement for not much money. Maybe someday. But it’s no biggy for now. Fairly comfortable for my ears too. Wish I had a real EQ though to turn up the bass a bit and see how that is. |

I put them on once and they are comfortable and not too dark, great build quality and damned good sound. You gotta get amp imo. To get what you are looking for. Look up the Oppo HA2 when you can. I own the Sony PHA -1a. I hook it up my gfs iPad, stream Amazon Music (best sound quality I've ever heard for streaming, insane) plug in my ANC headphones called PSB-M4u2 and it's heaven. Grados plugged into a Toshiba laptop? Amazing. Crystal clear highs with no veil, forward mids and deep extended well controlled bass. Stunning sound with soundstage and separation. That sound you mention is out there but I think u need a setup to find it. BTW the ANC on my PSB -M4u2 is pure crap/trash. I have heard the Bose QC line is unparalleled in noise cancellation. |

Wow lol, at exactly 12:00 into this review, Zeos describes exactly what original post is asking for, and gives a description of it.
Looks like 400 USD. YouTube "Z Review - Audio-Technica ATH-A1000Z" |

The Audeze sine is on ear. At least according to everything I’ve seen about them. I’m not sure about that Bose now. The NC totally hurts my ears. Yes you can turn it off and I do. But EVERY SINGLE TIME it reconnects to phone the NC is automatically turned on to its highest setting. Plus my ears sweat in these after 20 minutes or half hr. I don’t know of anyway to EQ the phone. Not just music but games too. I’ve tried the Audio Technica $550 wireless as mentioned in my op and it’s not got much bass. And that model is supposedly rated the best wireless there is. According to a huge review site. Don’t remember the name. I’m thinking about trying the Shure SE535 or Shure SE846. The Sennheiser PCX or is it PXC? 550 model that has an app to EQ them. And the HD-1 wireless too. And maybe the Audeze EL-8 closed. Those are my choices now. Gotta wait for my returns back first which should be done by next week. They should have the first of three tomorrow and that’ll give me $1000 to use for my next order. I’m not sure if I should start low with the Sennheiser or just go for the Shure SE846 and maybe call it done since they might be the best of these for bass and sound. But I did read that the Shure SE535 is fantastic too with great bass. Ugh! I feel like I’m in headphone hell lol. I’m not into ever getting an amp or dac. I tried the Mojo at my local place and heard no difference in sound at all except it was a lot louder. Plus I’m low on funds. And I don’t think I’m into this that much since I won’t be using the cans much and it’ll just be for some music once in a while and the 4 games I play on my iPhone. |

If you really are into bass I'll highlight the description of the se846

But no clue since I haven’t heard them. As soon as my refund is here I’ll order the Shure SE846 to try. I hope so much it’s for me |

tl/dr
DT880's , are what you seek |

but perhaps not the most ideal headphone choice for the heavy bass-loving hip-hop/rap/electronica crowd since the DT880 doesn't quite muster up the hefty bottom-end response required for anchoring modern funkitude.
