I think more likely the magic of Escient. You know one day the company is there and then "poof", like magic, the next day it's gone!

I was hoping i would not have to re-visit this subject. I a have gone from no re-boots required to about a weekly re-boot required to very recently re-boot needed every 2-3 days. (Audi stops, front panel freezes, no buttons working) I can live with it but worry about the trend line here. To summarize, this was a unit that got a new 750 HDD and had the power supply rebuilt in Ft. Worth, in that order as I recall. I guess most of you would recommend holding on for the ride for the moment and see where this does? (or not?)
The reboot takes only a couple of minutes or a bit less so I can live with it. |

mine locks up on me while playing a Christmas playlist and need a reboot to recover. First time since I replaced all the caps and reloaded the OS a couple of weeks ago.
While I have the unit apart, I did noticed one of the power connector has some oxidation on it. I used DeoxIT to clean that out. If power connections is intermittent, the unit can lock up and/or reboot. If you don't mind taking the cover off, take a look at those areas.

Would be good to know if you continue to have that happen and if so, how often. I have noticed that the 300 chassis has no vent holes over the hard drive, but the 750 does. Wonder if putting the 750 drive into the 300 chassis is causing heating issues which of course can lead to crashes on any computer. One thing is key when troubleshooting, however. Change only one thing at a time, watch result, then try something else and watch etc. otherwise you will never know what fixed (or broke!) things.

Not on mine. Never saw that before. If it freezes while a tune is playing, it keeps whatever is showing on the screen, i.e. song and artist. When it happens again, I am going to check to see if the fan is running. I am also going to look into getting the cooling improved. Interesting that the 750's had vent holes over the HDD, not the 300's though and now I have put a 750 drive into my 300, so I am thinking cooling may be a culprit here. Might try running it for a few days with cover off also.

I added an extra fan to one of my MS750. Pulled the original fan off the back and place it infront of the power supply. Secure it with 2 sided tape. Direction I choose was to get fresh air in from the bottom of the case and into the unit. Where the original fan is located, I mounted a same size fan and it is constantly on. Using a disc drive Y cable to get 12V to the new fan. Direction of that fan is to vacate the hot air from the machine.

Those ideas seem to be right on track. They key question is whether there is enough grillework to admit roughly the same cfm you are going to exhaust. Rule is like in the HVAC business, air flow in must be same as airflow out and vice versa. You can put a 350 cfm vent hood in your kitchen, but it won't pull better than a small one with all the windows closed unless you have 350 cfm equivalent of make up air somewhere. There has been some opinion expressed that heat is an issue for these units and it would not surprise me. The 300 has a very strange grille area, rear across the top of the cover. No holes over the hard drive area at all. So all my fan does is pull air through the top rear and exhaust out the rear, i.e. no airflow to speak of over the other components. If you look at a Fireball, it has lots of holes center top and even on both sides. I would actually like to buy a 750 cover off a dead unit as at least it has holes over the HD.
