Carnage - please look away
Just took delivery of the ref250 yesterday but something went horribly wrong by the end of the day :
Fired up the monoblocks around 3pm. Let them workout for around 5 hours. Checked the bias & made adjustments around 8pm. Started to listen around 9pm. Just about to knockoff around 12 midnight & thought why not 1 more track. Towards the end of the track, a loud noise from the inside of the amp coupled with sparks ! Jumped out of my seat & rushed over to switch both amps off. One of the caps have completely dislodged from the PCB & must have bounced of the chassis (lucky chassis was in place) & landed upside down. What could have caused such a thing ? I only hope that it is a sub standard cap that died a premature death as the other caps still looks pretty normal upon visual inspection. My dealer is very apologetic. He will try to get things resolved while I hold his ref 210 on ransom. What do you think ? Regards, Joe Ling PS : The units sounded quite good out of the box.

Sorry to hear. Total bummer to get your new toy in and it goes up in smoke. At least your dealer did the honorable thing!

Apologies for my enjoyment of your Carnage, but I just love electronics in failure mode! I was an electronics tech ages ago but have not lost my fascination of electronics in failure mode!
Infant mortality most likely. (I hope it's not politically incorrect to say "infant mortality") ..but that's what we called it back in the day! one of Murphy's laws: a component, i.e resistor or capacitor, will always fail so to preserve the fuse. |

Joe,
I am glad it did not harm the speakers...... That is an amazing photo! Thanks for sharing and let us know what root problem was.

You more than likely had a tube go and it took out a resistor on the board. Sounds like a loud crack when the resistor blows. I had ARC Ref 610s and unfortunately things like that were happening all too often. That's the reason I'm no longer an owner of ARC electronics after 20 years.

Looks like a defective cap that vented. I have seen caps that took off like bottle rockets and hit the ceiling.

Joe...it's good it did not take out anything else with it in the process. Hopefully, you will be presented with a pristine unit that has been fixed and you will have zero issues with it going forward. Everything I have read about the Ref 250s has been very positive. I hope you get to enjoy them again soon

Thanks guys. My only consolation is that my dealer is an understanding chap. His ref 210 has been on loan to me for more than 3 months & looks like will do more time in my listening room while he works out with factory what the problem is. Hopefully it's just the cap & nothing else. This looks like the main power smoothing section with many more bigger caps downstream (or upstream ? Can't tell). Well, the rest of the caps looks fine so I am hoping it's just the one cap.
Frank750, I have had the bias sense resistor fail in my ref 110 & yes it did make a loud noise. I don't think this is the case for my ref 250 though. Regards, Joe Ling
