Default Magico with McIntosh

I heard a pair of Q5's and fell in love. I have a pair on order. I heard them with Boulder amps and Spectral preamp and cd. I've been reading a lot about Magico needing "fast" amps. I have McIntosh 601's. They bench over 800plus each into 4 ohms as per Hi-Fi News review. Will they be a good match. I believe the 601's are a bit "faster" than the older more traditional Mac "tube-like" amps. Opinions please......

The Q5 needs a "fast amp?" You mean the all knowing reviewers said the $60,000+ speaker won't respond to a signal as quickly as a speaker a tenth the price? The MC601s should be terrific. Congratulations on your acquisition!

Hi Jim,

First of all, a super big heartfelt congratulations. I am sure you will love them. I am sure the MC601's will handle the Q5's and sound excellent. Your C500 will make the most of the combo. You could always see how it goes and enjoy them for now.

Thanks Gary. LOVE the Infinity's. I had a pair of Ren 90's and liked them very much.

Congrats Jim !
Not only I agree with Gary and Joe, but I would tend to think that Magico should sound even better with Mc.

The 501's didn't work at all with Wilson Sasha's. Slow, poor detail, kind of hazy.
It was like listening to background music, no passion, dynamics, excitement.

That being said, it's my understanding the 601's address many of the issues above. Truthfully, I think Mac has made great strides in their sonics over the last 4 years or so but I think there are many other products that are significantly better.
The only way for you to really tell is to try something other than the 601's to get a comparison in your system. Otherwise, it's all conjecture.
