As my son would say...."back in the day", I had a pair of Ohm F's driven by a big SAE amp, a 2600 I think. For all their faults, and there were many, the omnidirectional Ohm F's threw an incredible soundstage - not like minimonitors, more like a live performance.

I think Jim's explanation of the MBL sound matches my experience with the Ohm F's.

I got rid of the Ohm F's because they would start to sing at 200 watts and blow up at 201.

I'm wondering if the MBL's create a sound field similar to the Ohm F's?

Has anybody heard both?

I too will be in Singaopre, I think the first or second week in December. Jerry, if you would please give me the contact info for the store that has them, I wuld appreciate it.

Thanks,

Tom

The last time I was at my dealer, I was able to bring some records to listen to the following system:

MT-10-C500-MC2KW-MBL 101 Extreme. I think for digital there was some Esoteric gear, but I wanted to listen to the MT-10.

I brought Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Music" on 200G 45rpm vinyl. The imaging was so precise, you could hear how far the space was between the tom and the snare drums in Art Blakey's drum kit. It was incredible. That is such a fun record to hear on a "big" system. I love how Monk yells to Coltrane to begin his solo. Its like he's in the room.

Interestingly, they are a dealer for SME as well. He's had a number of customers prefer the MT-10 over the SME 20/2!

Anyway, just sharing a fun story. And no I didn't get the MT-10, but its on my list.

Cool. When I auditioned the XR200 yesterday, the dealer just got the MT10. I'll stop by again and give it a spin. It will be interesting to hear and compare to the SME 20/2 which I am very familiar with.

I 'm interested in your thoughts. He did say that with a superior cartridge on the SME, all bets are off, but then you're comparing a $10K TT to a $25K TT.

Tom.......I remember the Ohm F speakers. I listened to a pair in San Francisco years ago, I think at Pacific HiFi on Market Street. If I remember right, they were not very efficient.

Yep, those are the beasts.

Wild understatement! I blew my pair up, oh, maybe 3 or 4 times. Efficiency aside, they also suffered from doppler distortion because all of the sound came from a single driver. If you had a female vocal and a strong electric bass, it sounded like the vocalist was singing behind a fan. But when they were positioned away from room boundaries, they threw a wide and deep soundstage that was very involving. I've yet to hear a speaker duplicate it.

I'm very intrigued by the MBL speakers, and hope they are able to create the soundstage I heard with the Ohm F's without all the downsides. I need to find someplace or somebody close that has a pair I can audition.

If you haven't heard the YG's Kipod's, they are in another shop in the building. Give them a good listen too. Very nice speakers, not much on looks though.
