Default Ref 5 SE Fever? I say wait.

I have about a year old Ref. 5. I got caught up in this upgrade fever and called the service at ARC couple of times and left messages. After waiting 2 days for someone to call, I said hell with it and called my AD. Gave me a good deal on mine and I walked out with brand new Ref. 5 SE in a sealed box.

At home I opened the box and found the same old remote (plastic case). I read here some are getting the metal remote. I looked at the shipping date on the box and saw Mar. 26th. So this is very current production item.

I plugged in the tubes and set it up in my rack. The Plexi cover is held by round headed silver screws - they looked very out of place. It shows zero hours on the tube useage. First impression - sounds very promising. My Ref. 5 had 250 hours on it.

After about 3 hours of running I could see the top plexiglass cover beginning to warp downward. On touching the top, it felt quite warm.

I tuned off the unit. This burn-in is going to take a long long time.

To any potential trigger puller, my advice is - wait till ARC irons out these production wrinkles.

Banter,

Thank you for sharing and welcome to AA !
Did you call ARC to ask about the plastic remote ?
I got a brand new plastic cover when I told them about the slight fainting over the 6550 for my REF 2 Phono and I keep it as a spare.
The fainting I have is extremely slight and you have to look very carefully and closely to see it.

Welcome Banter. Sorry about your experience.

My Ref 5 SE came with the metal remote. After 125 hours, the top cover is fine. Also, the top screws are black.

I've had the 5 SE for about one month. So far, I am extremely pleased with this unit.

Mike

My (silver) Reference Anniversary has silver screws on the plexiglas cover. No sign of warping after 800 hours of use.

Banter,
I found my ref 5 would be quite warm and the plexi cover would bulge slightly. I noticed in the winter, when my house is quite cool, that the cover remained flat. Is the unit positioned on an open rack with lots of ventilation? If so, I would expect the cover to be flat. One other thing, I am pretty sure that you can flip the cover over and install it. Try that and see if it is any better. You can always replace it with a metal top and the warp issue is solved.
Chris
