new(er) McIntosh on a budget
I'm currently using a vintage C30/MC2505 combination which I love. At some point this year I'm planning to upgrade to a newer McIntosh system. My budget will probably be about $4k, although less is better. I'm looking at perhaps a used 6600 or 6900 integrated. I love the simplicity of an integrated. In the opinion of those on this board, would I be giving up much with an integrated when compared to say a used 252/C41 combination (which would be in the the same ballpark price-wise)?
Obviously this is a very subjective question - I'm just looking for general input. -Matt Last edited by eedork; 04-20-2009 at 10:14 PM. |

I know a lot of people swear by the integrated's, mostly for the convenience factor (and that they really do sound wonderful).
However, if I have the space on the rack, something always makes me want to go separates. Separate power transformers typically gives better sound quality. A 252/41 combo will certainly be blissful!

I'd go for 252/41 combo. More flexible for future spending (I mean upgrade).

Pete -
I agree, the C40 is sweet - I love that it has a built in 20W amp too. Honestly, I could probably power my speakers for 90% of the listening I do with that little monitor amp. But the C40 doesn't have a remote, which is one priority in this upgrade. That's why I was thinking of the C41 initially. What is the pre in the 6600 based on? It must be one of the newer designs since it has a digital readout. -Matt |

Hmmmm....I'm not sure which pre the MA6600's pre is based on. I'm sure someone will chime in shortly and help us with this one... Pete

I think a C42 is a much better buy than C40 or 41. Full digital volume control & EQ.
