John.......You won't be disappointed. I have spent three times that amount on interconnects, and only received a fraction of the improvement this upgrade provides.

The only problem is that to take advantage of the upgraded analog audio, I probably will have to spend three times the amount of this upgrade for interconnects.

John.......I understand completely. I had to buy three pairs of unbalanced interconnects, too. I chose the 1.5 meter Tributaries Silver Series unbalanced interconnects, as these are the cables I chose to use on the rest of the MX120 home theater gear. I am very pleased with the Tributaries performance.

Well, it could be worse. You could be trying to hook up a 7.1 system and would need four pairs.

John.......So true. I am pleased with my 5.1 set up. It is perfect for the room.

This means that the Oppo was set to convert SACD to PCM instead of DSD (or if you have it set to DSD and still have it hooked up to an HDMI switch or display that is not DSD compatible it will automatically convert back to PCM). This would not have made a huge difference in your comparison as only one of your review selections looks like it was a SACD, but I will say that listening to SACDs via DSD on the Oppo does sound better than PCM. Of course for multi-channel SACDs leaving it set to play back as DSD isn't as much of an option unless you do not need time alignment or bass management for your 5.1 speakers - if you do you need to switch back to PCM in order to have those setting be active. In any case, I would be interested to have you listen to SACDs on the Oppo with playback set to DSD for 2 channel and see what you think...

Another interesting comparison that I am sure will happen soon will be the various versions of the Oppo vs the MVP-881! The end result of that comparision should be as expected given the cost differences but it will be fun to see how the new Mc Blu-Ray performs
I think you make a good point regarding DSD vs PCM. I really like my MCD-500 for CD playback and in that area it is the best that I have had in "my" system. The 500's SACD (DSD) playback is really no different than the Sony, Cary or Esoteric units I had in the past. They all sounded very similar.

All right! I got my RMA from OPPO this afternoon, so my BD-83 will be on its way back for the upgrade as soon as I can get it boxed up and over to UPS (probably after Xmas). It will probably be upgraded and back to me before my MVP881 shows up.

John.......I got my RMA # for my Oppo BDP-83 upgrade via email today, as well. Mine is already boxed, so off to UPS in the morning. Kind of exciting!

I just got my RMA number for my BDP-83 also. I will drive send mine off after Christmas as well. Any suggestions on "affordable" interconnects? (I am using Monster now on this unit)

Dan,

Great review. I hope to have my MCD500 working tomorrow or the next day.

I posted the comment below in one of the other threads before I saw this one.

How long before you have three more MC275s in your theater system?
