Default Cars as an investment

Any stories of cars you had an opportunity to own but turned it down only to regret it later? Examples that really appreciated over the years that is.

I have a few...

1. Turned down not one but two chances to own a GT3RS 4.0L new. What was a $200k car is now a $775k car.

2. Turned down an opportunity to own a pristine Carrera GT. At the time it was a $335k car and I thought that was waaay too much. Today? $1M+

3. Had an opportunity to buy a Dino GTS in the early 90's for a laughable sum of under $50k. Today it is a $375-400k car.

4. 1967 427 Corvette BB with matching numbers in 1989 for $12k. I'm not sure what the prices are today but it's not $12k.

5. Considered buying as "an investment only" a 918 Spyder... Chickened out. Could have made $700k easy just holding it in a garage for a few years...

6. Finally, always wanted a 2005 Ford GT. Loved that car. Walked away from a few deals. Could have enjoyed it and not have worried about depreciation at all or even made money at the right time.

With some "classic car funds" returning over 500% in a decade, classic cars have become an asset class for investors and not just objects of passion. While the volatility year over year and economic cycles are difficult to predict, I believe over long term these types of funds will continue to make $$$ for investors. https://www.cnbc.com/2016/01/04/pass...ing-speed.html

More than I can remember - or at least, care to remember.

Closest comparable was a 1967 Corvette Convertible (not 427) that an elderly local man owned since the car was two years old. This car was the very definition of pristine original. Car was red, with black top and interior with just over 50,000 miles.

He wanted $20K which would have all but cleaned out my capital at the time in 1991 and I really didn't have a place to store the Corvette anyway. He wound up selling the car to another local who sold the car for $30K a couple months later. That was one that got away I'll never forget.

My 1989 Lamborghini Countach (which I bought brand new) more than tripled in value over 30 years.

What's the going price for a 67 427 convertible these days? I remember the classic vettes went through the roof some years back and then cooled off a bit.

Yes, I do know quite a bit about the Countach. Aside from being painted in the very rare Muira Blue, it is the documented (letter direct from Lamborghini S.p.A.) last Countach built.

I sold a Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 and totally regret it.

I’m shocked how much they bring now in all kinds of conditions.
