It is important to note that - technically speaking - the quantity of music in the classical repertoire is fixed and the listener is generally less likely to duplicate a given work with another when a later recording of the work appears.

This is especially true in the digital age where recordings do not "wear out" as had been the case when vinyl was in its prime.

Therefore, I feel that sales figures alone of record/CD/other may be misleading in determining the amount of classical music listening actually taking place.

Whether this applies to jazz as well, I really cannot answer.

Kind of true, but classical music interpretation practices have changed over the past couple of decades with the raise of "historically informed practices" and period instrument use with faster tempos and rougher sounding brass.

So if you compare the Beethoven that was recorded by Karajan in the 1970s with that recorded in the 1990s and 2000s from the likes of Jordi Savall and Jos van Immerseel is like night and day. That's why I keep buying new classical music music even though sometimes it's overlapping repertoire.

I just can't have a single interpretation of the Eroica or the Resurrection symphony.

Ha - I had just been listening to Beethoven's third symphony this morning performed by - you guessed it - Von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic, DG late '70s.

Also this ties into the fact that Jazz appears to be the most expensive genre*.

*(opinion) Because Jazz and the engineers behind Jazz lend itself to take advantage of the nuances, information, and high resolution in music.

I like jazz, but in the iron triangle of good, fast and cheap; the good and cheap Rock is where I find myself.
Well........ According to the talking heads at Clear Channel that drove out the most popular Jazz station in Detroit WJZZ. NOBODY WANT TO HEAR MUSIC WITHOUT VOCALS!! Yet.... via the internet you can find Jazz station all over the WORLD. I just find it amazing spend all this loot on stereo equipment. Then only be restricted to a low level music quality source format. Yea I'm still bitter about it! Since then years later I learned that team went to Philly and created a wonderful market "MUSIC WITHOUT VOICE VOCALS"!!

What is really sad jazz groups between 70's and mid 80's created music pieces that rival some of known jazz greats! No CD's where ever made, just those LP's I bought as kid or I find used. I KNOW.... I KNOW... no vocals can't sound good!! That is why SACD, Hi-REZ, and DSD have simply no value to me. NO CONTENT per my genre!!!

Signed, SOOOOO FRIGGIN PISSED!
