Default Preamplifier for 800d3

Hi All

In your experience with the D3 series, I own the 800 D3, what preamplifier have you found works well?

I know we focus on amplifiers but let’s say for this discussion the amplifier is neutral and with adequate power, what preamplifier would deliver a relaxed presentation with a deep soundstage?

I find the 800’s can be forward sounding, even when positioned well into the room, so need a mid hall type presentation.

McIntosh is not an option but have access to other brands like Accuphase, Luxman, Boulder, Audionet, Gryphon and many others. Problem is, none I can demo in my system.

I was seriously looking at an Audio Research Ref 5SE or Ref 6 and whilst it provided a prodigious wide soundstage, everything seemed pushed forward and worries is was not the best match for these speakers.

My room is well treated so no issues there.

Really appreciate the responses.

Depends on the amp you are using.

I’m curious, if you’ve got the M1.1, why would’t you just go with the matching L1 preamp?

Did you try the Ref 6 with that system?

The soundstage and depth is superb.

Also have a look at the PS Audio BHK preamp.

I have heard with an Esoteric C-02x and Esoteric amp and really liked it - great dynamics, bigger soundstage than McIntosh which i currently use and very musical.

Vinnie Rossi L2 Reference or Supratek Cabernet if you are looking for tube warmth plus soundstaging.

Haven’t actually tried the Ref 6 in my system, was at a dealers but also read it gives a front row presentation. You find it otherwise? What about the older Ref 5SE?

Already have it

Looking for a different flavour but something not quite as expensive as the L1.
