Listening to . . . . Sibelius - Violin Concerto
Jascha Heifetz - Violin Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Walter Hendl, Conductor An RCA Living Stereo LP, recorded in 1960 Not a violin concerto that I know well enough to whistle or hum with as I listen; but a masterpiece nevertheless, and a very challenging one for a violinist. Needless to say, Heifetz does an extraordinary job, and while I wonder where Fritz Reiner was on the day this was recorded way back in 1960, Walter Hendl and the Chicago do a beautiful job. (Hendl was the associate conductor of the Chicago from 1959 to 1963)

My favorite composer's music is now playing in my little listening room.
Listening to Hector Berlioz - Romeo and Juliet (Which just happens to be my favorite composition by my favorite composer) London Symphony Orchestra - (Sir) Colin Davis, Conductor A part of the Colin Davis - Berloioz Cycle, recorded in the mid 1960's A two disc, LP box set by Philips I love this music and I love the way that Colin Davis and the LSO play it.

Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Antoni Wit   I purchased Symphonies 3 & 4, after a recommendation of Kal in his 'Music in the Round' (Stereophile). I liked them so much that I bought Blu-ray number one in this series now. First listen now: it is equally good!

Op. 77, Double Concerto in A minor, Op 102 Julia Fischer - Violin Daniel Muller Schott - Cello Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Amsterdam - Yakov Kreizberg, Conductor A Pentatone SACD, recorded in 2007 Julia Fischer can flat play a fiddle. A girl with amazing talent, power and finesse. I think she lives the music she plays. And she wins my special prize for another of her attributes .!!!!! .  .

Not so hot, but his albums are beauties: Jordi Savall.
Marais - Suitte d'un Gout Etranger - Pièces de Viole du IV Livre, 1717   Posted often before. Savall recorded this in 2006. He had recorded the 5 'Livres' (books) before in the seventies (mostly, also in the 90s), but here he did the 4th book again. Sound is magnificent.

Just the Quintet today--they give an impassioned and powerful performance, captured in wonderful sound.

Schumann - Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, Op. 23 Byron Janis - Piano Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra - Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Conductor London Symphony Orchestra - Herbert Menges, Conductor A Mercury CD, remastered by Wilma Cozart Fine and released in 1991 Hadn't played this CD in 20 years or so and just wanted to see "how it was". It is quite nice. Good sound, good performance. Probably not quite the equal of the original LPs, but very listenable.
