I know we don't know one another and this is the internet that one can read all sorts of Stupid things from (Strangers).
Even though that's the case I'm going to say to you what I would if we were buddies.
If you do decide to go with a Split-Unit ???
I cannot over STRESS going to the Biggest/Largest most Professional HVAC Company you know of.
This is not the sort of thing that some small Company can do IMO and do it Professionally to where you the Home Owner will NOT regret your decision.
I'll be even more {Blunt} ........
If you cannot foot the cost to have it done Professionally I'm saying to you then don't do it.

See if these pictures and text helps any.

Thanks for the detailed response. My installer is a long-established, reputable dealer. I had not thought of your earlier suggestion to have the unit sprayed matte black.

The issue of the air blowing on the viewer is one to consider. My wife and I always have the "discussion" about whether "it's cold in this room."

I could consider installing the split on the back wall, but that would involve an entirely new consideration of electrical, refrigerant and drain lines. Plus it would put the outdoor units too close to the neighbors on that side.

I can seat eight in the theater chairs. I have made a mistake in the initial setup. I need to elevate the second row one more level.

I can promise you that unless the manufacturers have changed they only come in what appears to be Gloss White.

And speaking of our (Wives) and the ongoing discussions over the HT room being to Cold.
That was also a consideration as my wife hated the Cold-Air coming right at us both when the seating was Relocated to the current 12' 6".
Even though the vents are adjustable the unit ended up being right beside us.
Now, with it being relocated to the rear over the components we have zero issues over how cold it is.
Also the other to me important concern was how much Heat is generated by the newer 4K Laser projectors like the JVC RS4500.
If the internal heat build-up with the JVC it automatically starts ramping up it's fans to cool.
My understanding is you don't won't it to ramp-up to it's Highest-Fan-Speed as it is then LOUD !!!
My thinking is with the Air-Handler located right where it is the back of my HT stays really cool so hopefully if I do end up with the RS4500.
That area will stay cool enough that the RS4500 internal heat will not go high enough for it to ramp all the way to it's Highest-Speed.
Plus if necessary I can always within reason drop the temperature more to help compensate for the additional Heat being generated, hopefully.
(And my wife not instantly saying, Terry I'm freezing honey)

Let's talk rear area of your HT for the placement of the Air-Handler.
Personally, and I hope I don't come across as a Smart-Ass that doesn't care about his neighbors.
If there is actually room on your (Property) for the outside Split-Unit I can tell you with a 100% certainty that's exactly what I would do.
That outside unit is not all that Large at all.
Especially for the size Split-Unit you would need for the HT.
I think my unit is 1 1/2 tons (24,000 BTU) Samsung.
Can't promise that but I know they looked up the work order back when it was installed in I think either 2011 or 2012.
In-fact I can go take the measurements for you then you will have some Facts not be wondering/guessing.

Well we discussed adding the 2nd roll seating now that we moved the front much closer to the screen.
But, we are older so after discussing it a few times we think in our case it would be a waste of our monies.

Thanks for the pictures and information. In our case, the outside unit can't go close to the house since we have a sidewalk there. The lines would have to snake under the sidewalk and up the house next to a bay window.

Heat-wise -- I'm dealing with a Sony 4K projector, Oppo disk player, Marantz processor, and five McIntosh amps with a sixth necessary when I go to Atmos.

Well my Good-Man I just had AT&T up-date my Internet Service.
I now have 50 MBPS and that meant they had to run a new higher-end cable to the house from the street.
Was no big deal at to be honest as I was here ans watched the 3rd party vendor do it.
They simply dug down on both sides of my driveway and ten went under it with the new cable.
Also I had underground drain-lines two years ago ran under my sidewalk with what's called, Pop-Ups in the yard to allow water drainage from the gutters.
I also watched those guys do that and it went smooth.

I only mention the above as it is really done all the time so your guys or a 3rd party vendor would do it for them if necessary.
So you might still wish to give that some additional consideration.

Are you by chance running the Sony ES5000 Laser projector ???
That's the other unit I am looking at but have been told by numerous members over on AVS that it would be way over-kill.

Hey buddy, I still say if it were me and it could be done I would have that Split-Unit in the furthest rear part of your HT.
Then, no noise at all to where you sit.
And it will certainly cool the HT down easily.

Hey don't give up easily as what we might think is a big-deal probably to the professionals it is not.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't given up. At the same time I was looking at the mini split, I was also looking to install a whole new heat and AC unit for the upstairs of the house (where the HT is). I have been hesitating, bouncing back and forth.

The Sony projector is the VPL-VW675ES I bought from Ivan a year or two ago. It is not the laser.

Well since the HT is on the same level you might then get away with simply Up-Dating your home HVAC system.
Even if you did that I (Suggest) to get in (Writing) that the new HVAC system is (Guaranteed) to cool the HT correctly.
That's what I did when I originally had all my HVAC systems up-dated by Hiller.
Guess what buddy ???
It simply did not work and I then went back to Management and the Owner and showed them how the temperature would rise as the day went by with the HT system being used.
I did it with (Timed/Dated-Pictures) so there was no doubt that what I was saying was factual.
Also, in my case I made it a point to tell the Manager over Sales that this time around I was not so concerned over cost.
I wanted a New up to date HVAC system that would Definitely cool the HT with No-Excuses later.
So, after hand delivering to the owner a packet with the pictures and the text explaining exactly what was going on.
He sent three (3) of his Managers out to access the situation and they all agreed the only way the HT was going to be cooled correctly was installing a Split-Unit.
Owner said install the correct size Split-Unit and Charge it off to Warranty !!!

So Terry H. PROTECT yourself is what I'm saying buddy.

Thanks for the advice. If I go the route of the new system, I don't think I would have an issue with heating and cooling the HT. Another complicating factor is that we have space for another room behind the HT, and both the mini-split estimate and the new Heat/AC estimate accounted for that room which we are not now certain we will create.
