Amplifier stands-sonic benefits?
I have 3 choices in placing my Ayre MXR's and could use some guidance:
1) Inside cabinet on MIGS as isolation. This option is the most convenient, but in the summer when I run the AC, the amps sometimes overheat despite best attempts at providing ventilation inside the open-backed cabinet. 2) On top of cabinet-on MIGS 3) On floor on amp stands-Floor space is tight, and this may impede speaker and sub placement options. Questions: Are the sonic benefits of giving the MXR's their own stands, worth the floor space? Thanks Barry |

Barry, I have different gear, but I think the outcome will be the same. When I moved my amp from the floor to a spiked, heavy maple amp stand the improvement was significant. So, yes, it is worth the floor space.

Tough question. I am thinking of using HRS Isolation Bases (either M3x or S1) sitting on top of thin marble or granite slabs for my Momentum's. I would like to keep the amps close to the floor to reduce as much as possible any reflective surfaces between my speakers. The other option as you note would be to use a HRS MXR or SXR single level unit. No hurry at this time.

Umm, both HRS and SXR trump my maple amp stand.

Barry,
Anything that one can do to attenuate vibration induced distortion will be worthwhile. This is one area that many folks, with top flight systems, seem to forget about. The investment is minimal and the rewards enormous. GG

Thanks for the advice. Will try amp stands and report back.

I used Finite Element Pagode Edition on all my Equipments. They did make better sounding overall, but not to the degree that they cost me. If all sound right and don't know how to
spend $$$ to make it sound better then investing in expensive racks will improve it. But if there is something in the sound that you still feel not right, racks will not help. But I've heard a big difference when Boulder top disc player play on the natural mable vs TAOC VS Symposium Ultra platform, on marble it sound worse, less ease to the ears. In conclusion, for me, same $$$ is better spend on exotic cables. TOGA Last edited by TOGA; 03-30-2012 at 01:41 PM. |

This will sound like voodoo, or that i am imagining things, but, with the Grand Prix Monaco stands for line stage, amps and on the footers of my speakers, we switched out the 'ball bearing' that couples each stand foot to the footer, from the stock one to some 'unobtainium' ball bearing that Grand Prix supplies, and heard a difference. In my room at the time was a dealer (not a dealer for the stands) and a well known cable manufacturer. I think it is fair to say that everything may make a difference- the question whether it is better is a separate issue.
You definitely do not want the option where the amps overheat- even short of shutting down, I can't imagine that operating at that margin is good for the sound, or for the health of the amps. |

My SRA VR-Series isoBases got my Lamm M1.2 reference monos off the floor and made a substantial impact in performance.

+1. Part of the reason why I have racked the MC2301s up high as my loudspeakers are close by. Despite McIntosh labs saying that the density of the amps are sufficient enough to alleviate any concerns, vibration induced distortion can originate from tube ringing as well.
