Dave - Will be listening to Vandersteen's Treo CT, Devore's 0/93, Bryston Middle T, and whatever Ivan may have at Legend. Will also listen to Wilson's Sabrina (would get me up to something like 50% on speakers), but they would delay any purchase by ~1yr. Am pretty much committed to a NA made speaker, but European would be OK. Nothing from China.

I recommend to take a look at Focal, too. I purchased the Sopra 1 and Sopra 2 and they both arrived within 10 days. I posted my impressions in the Focal sub-forum.

About 80% for my Legacy Calibers. I got a lot of my other gear used, if not the percentage would be lower.

Robert Harley in his book The Complete Guide To High End Audio (a good read BTW) sets up a hypothetical system with the following percentages - speakers 36%, amp & pre 36%, one source 12%, AC cords and conditioning 9%, and interconnects 6%.

Then he goes on at great length to give arguments and examples where those %'s are not a hard line to follow. Don't get too balled up in it. I suggest hitting an even balance between value of speakers to amplification. But remember, any weakness in the source component is there no matter what. Of course, as system upgrades proceed the %'s will change.

I also think Harley should have included room treatment. My experience is that is a very important element. That varies with what your room acoustics are.

Agree

Kinda negates him being a guru on the subject, no?

Anyway, if he is a guru, I have done well. Those %'s are (by chance) about what my lead system is.

symmetry is the key in terms of the room desired to fill, listening taste and power on hand to drive the speakers, and in most terms about 1/3 of the system cost to ratio is a ball park landing point.

WOW a giant can of worms. I seen some of Ivan's rigs with the mega high end speakers close to that 50% level, man but then everything is awesome
