Default Kimber Kable new series... Naked!

Was just browsing the Kimber Kable website and I noticed a new top of the line series in the Kimber stable, which is named "Naked". This looks Über on every fronts and feels exquisite in every way imaginable. Palladium plated... 24 ct gold plated over... I am afraid to know the price Looks like this will replace the venerable Select line from the top echelon. The Naked line looks like more jewelry than anything if you ask me. Always curious to hear about users though.

Here the designer talks about it. $10k for 1m interconnect.

It uses Rubies and Opals set in the wbt connectors to distinguish right/left channels. Takes the term "audio jewelry" to a whole new level.

Somebody should tell this guy that cotton (cellulose) is...a polymer.

I'm also not clear of the function of the palladium unless its to prevent oxidation of the underlying copper conductor.

I also don't understand to what he means that the palladium is present to prevent "diffusion"...

Stephen,
If you don’t plate an intermediary between gold and copper the copper will migrate (diffuse) into the surface of the gold layer.

This is well known phenomenon in electronics where gold edge connectors were often electro-deposited on top of bare copper printed wiring boards.

Usually Nickel (28)is used as an intermediary, but Ni is ferromagnetic.

Rhodium (45) is also used for this purpose, but is very expensive.

Palladium (46) is about 30% cheaper than Rhodium and shares many of its desirable electrical and physical characteristics.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the info.

What exactly is migrating? Is it copper atoms? What is the effect of the migration? Does it result in a failure mode?

As I understand it copper atoms migrate into and through the gold plating and appear on the surface, where they react with air to produce oxides of copper.

The failure mode for gold over copper printed wiring board ‘card edge’ connectors is high contact resistance and ultimate failure over time.

I know that gold over copper is a popular wiring choice for high end audio cables. I don’t know if there is a corollary failure mode.

At least Kimber has their metallurgy straight, which is a really good thing. Plus Palladium sounds more exotic than mere Rhodium.
