Q5, Q3 Speaker position?

I'm considering Q5's, maybe Q3's
In my current setup, I cannot bring the speakers more than 20" out from front wall. The side walls are not an issue as they are 8 and 12 feet away. They will be approx 9.5 to 10' apart from tweeter to tweeter.

Does anyone have them in this general distance and how is the bass?

Exactly what I was thinking but I'd like to hear from some owners. The only Magico's I've heard were so far out into the room there are phase issues masked as dimension and 3D.

I don't think this is a magico specific question. When you have a woofer unit closer to a boundary you will get more 'room gain' and you will be closer to the anti-nodes along your front to back wall dimension which will mean they get 'excited' more.

You should position your Sasha's so that the woofers are where the magico woofer's will be (not much different between the two speakers I suspect) and compare room measurements to see how the reponse is influenced. This would be the best indication you could get I think.

The ports do not cover a very wide frequency band, see below (red).



Relevant would be 20-40 Hz, this region may behave differently with the two speakers. I suspect most problematic areas to be between 30-200Hz, where they are likely to be more similar than different.

My Q3 is 7 feet from the back wall, 9 feet apart, 13 feet to side walls and 13 feet to listening postition.
Bass of Magico is very tight and crisp, no boomy, no overhang. My seat is against back wall,which is no good, so I tried to move sofa forward and push Q3 backward to compensate, but as I moved Magico, What cause trouble is the midrange, the voices, rather than bass. Amount and characteristic of Q3 bass changed drastically with how I put them on floor. with direct onto carpet, sound very thick and very heavy bass. With spikes only, sound much more opened but too thin. with supplied spike disks then perfect. Even more perfect with Harmonix 909MkII spike disks instead of Magico disks.
Based on my amateur measurement using Revel Salon2 in same room same position, I found that the closer the speakers to the rear wall, the worse room mode dip/peak in low bass region. from the pictures, you will see that when I moved Salon2 10cm each time closer to me, then got less dip/peak as speakers farther away from rear wall. Green graph is when Salon2 is 175cm to rear wall, light blue is 230 cm.
Also picture on how Q3 is standing in my room currently.

I just heard the Q3s at Ears Nova, where they were not much more than 20" out in the room, playing with the new Constellation gear (stereo amp, preamp) and the dCS Paganini. They were exquisite in every way. I don't think you'll have any problem with placement.

I was comparing them to the Rockport Avior, which is a very, very good speaker. Probably 90% as good for quite a bit less. But once you hear the Magico, it might be tough to settle for less.

The Sasha is the first Wilson speaker I've really liked, but these two are better, to my ear.

Joshua Cohn at Ears Nova was very helpful, extremely knowledgeable and a nice guy. I haven't made up my mind yet -- I heard the Q1s briefly, which also sounded very good, but I'd like to spend more time with them, and hear the S5s before deciding.
