Help renaming inputs on ARC Ref 40 preamp?

I've just installed a nicely broken-in Audio Research 40th Anniversary Reference preamp into my system.

A question for other owners or those who are familiar with this unit: Can one rename the inputs? If so, how?

If not ... how did ARC miss this rather basic function? Even relatively cheap Japanese stuff lets you rename inputs these days.

I have a ref5se and don't think inputs can be renamed.

Yes, they have missed out this basic function. Cheap Japanese stuff won't give you the sonic pleasure.

You are very lucky that the REF40 was broken-in - immediate enjoyment. Remember that many high-end preamplifiers do not even include a remote and only refer to input1 , 2, 3, 4 and 5 - we should be happy to have proper labels and a remote!

Agreed. I'm very happy that the Ref 40 is broken in. It sounds awesome.

And I'm not complaining that you can't rename inputs -- I'm just surprised. I thought that was standard fare these days.

As for high-end components sometimes not having remotes, I'm well aware -- I also own a CTC Blowtorch preamp, which has no remote. The only reason I was able to acquire it is because its original owner prefers a preamp with a remote, and was willing to give up this remarkable-sounding preamp for that convenience.

I noticed that you have owned both the Arc ref 40 and the blowtorch and I was wondering if you could provide a comparative assessment of these wonderful preamps. I owned a ref 40 but it was stolen and I am now in the market for a replacement. I am looking at the possibility of another ref 40, VTL 7.5, Lyra or blowtorch depending on what comes available. If you can provide any insight based on your experience with both the ref 40 and the blowtorch this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
