Default SLP-05 Capacitor Change

Has anyone upgraded the caps in their SLP-05? There are 21 caps in all including:

6 - 1.0uF - 200V
4 - 2.0uF - 400V
10 - 0.33uF - 200V
1 - 1.0 uF - 400V

The photos I have seen of other mods showed a replacement of the 6 1.0 uF caps. My guess is they are for output. I am not sure which would give me the most bang for the buck.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I thought the Cary SLP-05 included all upgraded capacitors compared to their other preamps, some of which offered optional upgrades.

Best,
Ken

Well, you can always upgrade! I don't think the capacitors are anything special in the SLP-05. That doesn't mean they aren't the right choice, but there are clearly other caps out there that others have found to sound better in other applications.

I think the SLP-05 contains very fine capacitors that are carefully matched for the component.

Try perusing this page and let me know what you think:

Have you experimented with tube rolling. Some of the rare tubes out there can offer significant improvements in sound.

Best,
Ken

Some of the caps are solen caps which are pretty cheap.

I have done a bunch of tube rolling. I am now using 6 Tung Sol 6SN7s (black glass round plate). I have tried others too.

Thanks for your comments. I am going to call Cary tomorrow and see what they have to say.

Tough to know 'what is what' in Cary gear as they do not release/share schematics. Those caps are likely coupling caps, which are not necessarily outputs.

Are you going to be doing the work? If so, just flip it over and pull the bottom plate and see what's in there.

Cary lists no upgrades available, so am guessing it has a nice set of caps from the start. Also guessing those Solen caps are not in the audio path so make no difference. Am doing the Clarity cap upgrade in my SLI 80 and replacing all the Solen caps with new ones, but only because they are 12yrs old and the SLI 80 runs pretty hot.

A friend of mine who builds amps is going to do the work. He said once he opens up the box he will be able to see what is on the output path.
