Anyone who finds joy in Bach's Cello Suites should sit down and actively listen to Anner Bylsma play them on the 1701 Servais Stradivari Cello. It is "historically informed." I expected the performance and the instrument to be good, and they are great. However, I am surprised and thrilled with Sony's sound engineering that is so very open and transparent and without a single "boomy" bass note, even with the slightly oversized instrument that can deliver some serious acoustics. It makes some other recordings I enjoy sound almost muffled.

Gregori's Concerti Grossi and Stradella's Sinfonie e Sonate. While they may not supplant Handel and Corelli, they are certainly enjoyable. Reverberant yet detailed sound.

Darius Milhaud - Quatuors N° 3, 4, 9, 12
Quatuor Parisii, Véronique Dietschy

20th century string quartet music from this French composer who wrote a vast oeuvre.
These pieces sound very modern, but they remain melodious.
Good sound, and very well played.

Default Haydn: The Paris Symphonies

Back from a trip and enjoying the stereo again...

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 82 - 87 (the Paris Symphonies)
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wein

Very nice mature and vivacious symphonies from Haydn. The interpretations from Harnoncourt are punchy with prominent brass. The sound on these discs is very good. I like it.

After his successful Lutoslawski series for Chandos, Gardner has now turned to Barok with equally fantastic results. The Melbourne Orchestra plays with great power and virtuosity; in turn Chandos has provided them with stunning SACD sound.

Corelli Opus 1 & 3: Church Sonatas - The Avison Ensemble on Linn Records in 24/192
This is the fourth installment of Corelli sonatas by Avison Ensemble on Linn, and the playing and sound are just as beautiful as the previous three.

Listening to . . . . . Mozart Requiem
Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Concentus Musicus Wien
Arnold Schoenberg Choir
Christine Schafer
Bernard Fink
Kurt Streit
Gerald Findley

A Deutcshe Harmonia Mundi SACD

Dozens of good recordings of this glorious music, but this one stands out - for the quality of the voices and the impeccable recording that makes the singers sound so perfectly placed and pure - The soloists just seem to appear in the front of your room and start singing . . a most lifelike recording. A stunning recording. This and the Linn/Mackerras are my two favorites.

I'm getting my copy of this SACD in a few days from Presto Classical. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the preview, Tony.
