Placement from front wall
Hi guys interested to know how far from the front wall you have your speakers (particularly Sophia / WP owners). My room is 17 ft deep and my Sophia's are 5 ft out. Just wondering what is typical ?
I understand the set up routine and I have played with placement. I think the overall SQ is optimal where they are but I have a dip in the sound curve around 45hz and thinking moving them closer (maybe 3 ft ? ) might help. There are no peaks - I have a flat curve other than this dip around 45 hz |

Is that ~5 feet from the rear or front edge of the speaker from the wall?

Mike - I have a pair of Avalons and I have them about 6 feet out from the front wall in a room that's about 22 feet deep. The further out the better they sound. I get a lot more open sound free from some possible "boxiness" that you can hear when your speakers are more constrained by space. Before I pulled them out, everything sounded pretty good, but definitely more 2 dimensional and flat....not nearly as much of a sense of depth.

Hi it's 5 ft to the rear edge of the speaker. Good deep soundstage I guess I might lose that if I move closer to the wall. Think I may end up shooting myself in the foot to gain a bit more bottom end ?

Try the Golden Ratio as a first point. Cardas.com speaker placement calculator...

Use the Wilson set-up guide that came with your speakers or their ap.
I am guessing you could move them a bit closer to the wall. If you take the 5 feet to the rear and add the 18" depth of the Sophia you only have 11' to the back wall assuming your head is from a minimum of 18"-24" from the back wall. That places you about 9' to your speakers. That is plenty but adding a foot or so would "probably" be better. |

Put blue tape on the carpet before you move them. You can thank me later.

By the way, my Sophia 2's are only 2.5 feet from the back wall (wall to back of speaker).

In my experience, Sophias and Sashas as well as Alexias sound better much closer to the wall than yours in a room of your size. Try 2 to 3 feet out and see if you lose the sense of space and dimension that you have at your current distance from the wall. If you don't lose, you will gain reinforcement on the low end.
