Agreed. The use of the old gold capacitors in lieu of the white teflon caps is somewhat puzzling: it will be interesting to hear the two side by side.

Do you think it was done to save money?

My suspicion is that supply might have more to do with it than savings. Apparently, upgrades of REF5's and REF2's to SE have been significantly delayed by the availability of the new teflon caps.

Good one! To be fair, this is all speculation at this point based on the picture in post #15.

Impossible to judge the cap performance simply by looking at the color of the casing.
I guess their supplier is able to make them in every color imaginable. |

This is certainly the case, but if the caps were the same used in the REF40, I doubt ARC would have them made in a different color just for the REF10. As I mentioned above, it will be interesting to hear these two preamps side by side.

They order them in batches. They are custom made to order. No problem in ordering a new batch in different color.

I, for one, am a little p***ed off. I was lead to believe that the Ref 40 was effectively a design project that was demonstrating how far AR could push the envelope. The difference in price could be justified, not only in sonic terms, but also by reference to the fact that the Ref 40 might appreciate in value. This new model effectively denigrates the added investment value of the Ref 40, and is a terrible PR move at this point.
I, for one, feel that AR marketed the Ref 40 as "limited", not only with respect to the nomenclature, but also with respect to the 2 chassis design, and they have betrayed each and every one of us who plunked down hard-earned dollars... Just my 2 cents worth... Greg |

BTW, the REF10 appears to have a touchscreen.
