Default A50 and Thiel 3.7s?

Been contemplating buying a pair of the 3.7s, but I'm wary about whether my A50 is up for the task. The specs of the Thiels are as follows:

Sensitivity: 90 dB@2.8 V-1m
Impedance: 4 ohms (2.8 ohms minimum)
Recommended Power: 100-600 watts

The A50 puts out 100 wpm at 4 ohms. Room size is 16x20. I listen to mainly rock and jazz.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

David

The Accuphase A50 is a superb amp as you know, and is designed to handle low impedance loads effortlessly. I also think its warm tonal balance would be a fine match for the Thiels which can be very revealing of the quality of amplification used. Given your room size I think it should be fine as long as you don't play at extreme levels but room filling volume shouldn't be a problem. Of course it would be ideal if you could try the combination before making the commitment, but I would expect it to work out fine.

Thanks. I've heard accuphase paired with Thiels before, and it sounded amazing. And I think you're probably right that the a50 is enough. My only concern is that I do like to listen to it loud. But my current speakers are also rated at 4 ohm and aren't as sensitive, and I don't seem to have any issues driving them, so I'm probably just overthinking things.

Well, regrettably I lost out on the Thiels to another buyer. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for another opportunity..

Looks like I'll soon be able to put my A50 to the test. These are now inbound:

3.7 Les Paul's in tobacco finish. Well worth the wait!

The previous owner used a Pass Labs 350.5, of which the 1st 40 watts are class A. Said he never once saw the amp switch to AB. And given the A50 quadruples down to 200 wpc at 2 ohms (tests show the 3.7 is more often under 3), I'm fairly sure my A50 will be more than up to the task.

I'll report back once I've had a chance to play with them..

Those are beautiful. How much are they going for now?

I love my amberwood CS3.7s.

I've compared them to pricier speakers and I still have misgivings about replacing them.

You should see if you can get the SmartSub SS2.2s and the S1 integrator.

Thanks! I bought these 2nd hand from a dealer. Only about 500 hours on them. Price was $6k plus shipping, which I thought was a great deal.

I've been considering the smartsub, but I'd first like to give my current REL Stentor III a try. It has a 300w class ab amp, and it was fast enough to hang with my previous speakers. Hopefully the same will be true with the 3.7s.

The SmartSubs were what Jim Thiel designed that makes the CS3.7s into a full range speaker. The integration and how it works is pretty groundbreaking.
