MX123 with Spotify

The MX123 have a Spotify Logo on the front panel.
When using Spotify with the MX123, Is the 123 is the Spotify source ( When connected to the Internet ) ? Or the Spotify iOS App on iPhone is the source ?

Today I'm using only Tidal with the 123 via Apple Airplay 2 and the iPhone is the source.

Any Basic explanation will be appreciated.

Via Airplay, it is your iPhone that is the source. It is also compressed and very likely not bit perfect. It is a convenient feature. For critical listening, you should look into a transport which is known to output bit perfect signal.

Others can chime in and keep me honest but I believe the Spotify Connect feature on Mx123 makes it the source. The Spotify app on your phone may simply be acting as a remote control. If using Spotify via AirPlay 2, your phone device would be the source.

1. the streaming is Digital so no lossless sound will be ...
2. Tidal is uncompressed sound and Spotify is compressed.
or not ..
So what's the conclusion ?

‘Lossless’ is determined by the source not whether it’s digital. A digital stream can be lossy such as MP3 or a lossless format such as FLAC. Both Tidal and Spotify are digital streams.

- Tidal can be lossless if you have the right subscription - HiFi. It’s lowest tiers are lossy.

- I am not sure about Spotify but I thought they had an option for streaming in a lossless format. I know they tested one.
