I know it's been awhile since I updated about my DS so here goes. The DS has now really started to break in and sound good. I was surprised just how a piece can change after break in. When I first got it my turntable would eat it's lunch on pretty much any recording you wanted to use, now the DS DAC is the winner on almost every recording, perhaps it's time for a new phono stage?

Or cartridge, or tone arm, or just pause ... And see what happens.

Serious about new phono stage? What do you have currently?

Default Two DACs are Better Than One!

I have been smitten with MQA, since Tidal started streaming albums from Warner Music. So smitten, that I bought a Mytek Brooklyn DAC! I find that decoding MQA with that DAC wins "hands down" vs. having Tidal do the "unfolding" and passing that to my DirectStream DAC. What that tells me is that the "unfolding" is not the main benefit of MQA, compared to the "deblurring" of having MQA built into the DAC.

But "regular" FLAC or AIFF files sound significantly better when decoded by the PS Audio DAC, much better! Though the Brooklyn is a very good DAC, decoding "regular" files, it sounds "dry" compared with the DirectStream DAC. Since I upgraded to Torreys, the stability of the image has been improved.

So, as crazy as it sounds, for the foreseeable future I'll be running two DACs, the Brooklyn for MQA, the DirectStream DAC for everything else.
