Default Bach, J S: Orchestral Suites

Playing this wonderful set again...

Bach, J S:
Cantata BWV119 'Preise, Jerusalem, den Herrn'
arr. A. Bernardini for orchestra
Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C major, BWV1066
Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV1068
Cantata BWV194 'Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest'
arr. A. Bernardini for orchestra
Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV1069
Ensemble Zefiro, Alfredo Bernardini

My previous impression which still applies:
Quote:
I have several version of these works, but this disc stands out for its biting performance which Gramophone called "thrillingly theatrical with a sense of joyful drama". The recorded sound, as usual from this French label, is top-notch.

Gently playing into the waiting room:

J.S. Bach - Sonatas & Partitas BWV 1001 - 1006
Sigiswald Kuijken, violin

To encourage Carlos!
No, these are such fantastic pieces, music reduced to its essence: sequences of notes that sound glorious and withstand century after century...

I was streaming it in 24/96.
Indeed a very solid performance.
I put it in my favourites folder.

I was confused by the 'Deutschlandfunk' label. I could understand if a James Brown, George Clinton or Curtis Mayfield album had 'Americanfunk' on it, but wondered if baroque mandolin is now considered funk in Germany, maybe thinking that I needed to get out more often. Google resolved it for me.

I think German funk is what’s called an oxymoron.

Default Shostakovich: Symphony No. 1 & Symphony No. 15

Went back to an "old" disc...

Shostakovich:
Symphony No. 1 in F minor, Op. 10
Symphony No. 15 in A major, Op. 141
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Jesus Lopez-Cobos

Good contrast between the first and last symphony. The Telarc recording is vivid and full.

Default Telemann

I just got this from Presto Classical...

A Telemann Companion
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, René Jacobs

This is a 7-disc set compiled from previously released material (1998 - 2009) which includes an opera (Orpheus), a Passion Oratorio 'Mich vom Stricke meiner Sünden' ('Brockes Passion'), and a bunch of orchestral suites and concertos.

Playing disc 5 which includes orchestral suites. Sounds exuberant and the recording is spot on. I like it

Currently on sale for $25.25 from Presto Classical.
