Definitely have to save the boxes for resale or shipping back to McIntosh when they need service, if ever. Mine are either in a corner of the basement or in the attic above the garage. and I'm in the same boat, if my wife ever found out...sheesh. But I make sure to sneak things in to the house when she's not home and honestly, she wouldn't even notice.

I live in a condo, we have storage in our underground garage, it's humidity controlled so I think just my amp box is in there. The rest are in storage in a climate controlled indoor storage facility. Seems silly to take up so much of my space with boxes, if I did the math it's probably cheaper to throw them out and just buy new boxes from AC if I need to ship anything.

For most people that's probably true. If a storage "closet" is say $50 a month and a box is $100 for a BIG component, there is no question it's cheaper to buy a new box if you need one. If you have room someplace in your house it's cheaper to keep them. If you are worried about insects, put each box in a large barrel sized garbage bag and tape it closed.

If you are a box swapper (change your components monthly) you should keep the boxes because the new buyer will want them.

Do you guys thing not having the box numbers match really impacts the value? I'm the same boat that I am not going to have any area to store all my boxes and the math does not work to store them for years.

Yeah, I'm thinking of dumping my MCD500 box, IIRC it's from a 301 or something in any case and the component is a common size so AC will likely have a suitable replacement in the event it ever needs servicing. And I don't intend on ever getting rid of my C2300 so that's another one that's just taking up space. I remember ordering a box from AC for my MX135 that I sold, they told me they actually get them direct from McIntosh, it was more of a universal box as it had holes for multiple foot arrangements, but otherwise it was 100% the same as the original Mc boxes.

But yeah, if not for city living I'd surely keep all the original boxes in an attic or basement.
