Default MCD301 subwoofer connection

I have a simple system. The MCD301 is the sole source. I use it as a preamp and connect to a pair of 501's with the variable RCA outputs.

I now want to include a subwoofer in the system.

Can I run an RCA line from the fixed outputs to the sub?

Is this the proper connection?

The sub is a Velodyne DS-10.

eljr........Absolutely not. A line level output to the Velodyne would be like powering the sub with your volume level on the MCD301 set to 81%.

Install "Y" connectors on the varibal outputs of the MCD301 and power the subwoofer from one of the outputs and the amplifier from the other for each channel.

Follow up question.

Can I run balanced connections from the MCD301 to the 501's and unbalanced RCA connections to the sub then?

eljr.......Providing both the XLR and unbalanced variable outputs are both active simultaneously on the MCD301 then I see no reason why you cannot connect the subwoofer in that manner.

I'll find out if they are. Thanks.

To further my audio education:

I connected a second system I have by using the pre out on my NAD 372 integrated amp to the sub. Is that not considered a fixed output?

It also has a pre out 2 with a volume control (is this not the variable one?) on the NAD that I have also connected the sub too, at full volume as that is the same as the pre out (fixed?) according to NAD.

What am I not understanding?

eljr.......Generally speaking, a preamp output is usually always variable while line level outputs are fixed.

Do the 501s have extra connectors to loop with, my the 601 amp does?

You could then plug into the extra output on the 501 rca jack to the sub instead of Y connector right?

The MC501's do not have the extra outputs.
