How can you get better classic sound than a Pioneer SX-1250 driving a pair of JBL L 100's!
Crank it up, baby! ELP, Rush, BTO, Byrd's, Beatles, Three Dog Night, Stooges, Hendricks, Doors, America, Stones, Beach Boys all sounded great! Chamber music? What? Huh?

And there were no GD record cleaning machines either. Pull that baby out and slap it down!

. . . . Compared to what is available today, this old stuff is not bad at all. I was listening to one of my older systems two weeks ago that has Adcom electronics, Snell speakers, a VPI turntable and it sounded very musical. It lacks a bit compared to my latest system in terms of impact and detail. New stuff is better, but the incremental difference is not huge.

Nelson Pass designed a number of Adcom amplifiers in the 1980's

I did not know that and wonder if Nelson Pass designed the ones I have? My Adcom amp is a 555 Series II, and the preamp is a 565. These were purchased new sometime around 1991 or 1992 and have proven to be both good sounding and extremely reliable. The phono preamp in the 565 is very good even by current standards. It easily bested the Apt Holman, itself no slouch in that department, which I still have stored in the basement somewhere. Generally I have kept too much hifi equipment for too many years.

Would you believe, in all the years I've been in this hobby (about 45 years) I've NEVER owned a stereo receiver? I've looked at many, listened to many, and lusted for many. But I've never owned one. I've always been a separate components kind of guy...

Once, several years ago, I came very close. I pulled the trigger on a very nice Marantz Model 19 receiver on eBay. Paid the guy and everything. Then, the seller contacted me and told me he was checking it over and suddenly discovered the right channel was "blown". He said he wouldn't feel right shipping it to me that way. He refunded my money.

To this day, I suspect what really happened was he developed a case of seller's remorse. So, in all these years, I still have never owned a receiver.

Yes, owned the exact same model also. It was during the great Japanese invasion of products designed to Julian Hirsch's standards for audio quality: frequency response and THD. Funny how the measurements haven't improved much if at all for audio components. Even at the time there were huge arguments as to whether these measurements had much bearing on sound quality. Not much has changed I guess.

Then surely you remember the controversy back then about power ratings ie: Peak Power...

Yes some very creative marketing of amplifier power output but there weren't any well defined standards at the time. And we had both schools of thought of peak versus average power.

The Phase Linear which advocated an unregulated power supply to handle very high instantaneous power peaks and the Bose 1801 power amplifier that had tightly regulated power rails. Remember the Bose amplifier? Personally I preferred the Phase Linear's at the time but who knows how I would react to it today given several decades of experience. I may look for one online and give it a go just out of curiosity.

I sometimes wonder if some entrepreneurial soul had the desire and dedication to build an audio museum where some of the landmark audio products could be preserved and displayed?
