Default Need help deciding!

Hi folks, I am torn whether to buy a Micromega Aria AirDream streamer as my tuner to access internet radio or an Accuphase T-1100. On one hand, the MM can access infinite stations, but you pay for that through your internet bill. And on the other there is the Accuphase T-1100; arguably the best analogue tuner in the world. Looks beautiful, though it is limited to FM & in my area realistically only about 6-8 really good stations. But I do enjoy those stations.

I'm a bit old school and like the idea of awesome analogue radio, and the sound is a bit warmer and nicer than digital radio. The Accuphase has character, but there is no denying the access to infinite digital stations (including am) is a plus with the MM. The problem i'm having is, again being a bit old school, the reliance on a tablet or phone to access your stations, and then having to use your download allowance.

Here are a couple of photos. On looks alone, it's a no brainer. Let me know your thoughts & which way you think I should go. Cheers

Ever consider hooking a computer or a Sonos up to your system and getting internet Radio that way? A modded Sonos might be a nice option for you since it doesn't look like you have a screen near by. If you are considering a box dedicated to internet radio, IMO, Sonos will give you more options (not to mention flexibility if you want to add other zones).

Hi Matt, thanks for your input. I don't have ethernet connections where my system is located & don't have the room for a laptop to sit on top (actually I don't think they look good on audio racks). The W4S modded Sonos looks interesting, though I think the MM AirDream might be a higher end product? I guess my dilemma at the moment is deciding whether i'm better off concentrating on digital radio or the best of analogue (Accuphase)?

I can't help you too much with your dilemma... it's definitely a personal choice. For me, radio is more about news and music discovery, and less about sound quality. I would rather put my audio dollars elsewhere.

Just a small note on the W4S Sonos - it will work on WiFi too, though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if your goal is to stream Hi Res content. It would be totally fine for internet radio though.

Also, I agree with you about laptops on audio racks. I would only do it if it was something that could be easily hidden. For me, I have a Mac Mini in a cabinet, and for the most part I control it remotely.

Thanks for your feedback Ivan I have always wanted to own an Accuphase piece & am less inclined toward streaming to be honest being a bit old school. And the Accuphase looks beautiful. Another factor is I have a dedicated fm aerial connection behind my rack connected to an FM aerial on the roof of our apartment building. As a result, FM reception is excellent (though with the T-1100 that's not such an issue as it is a good DX'er). I'm leaning toward the Accuphase. Still i'd like to hear some feedback about the AirDream if anyone has any experience with it.

Cheers,

David... Just keep in mind what the FM choices are in this country, today. Sadly, the pinnacle of nostalgia is often a downward slope as we move into the changing world of economic descent driven by increasing advertising hours & broadcasting compression.
