I've made PLENTY more expensive purchases of items I realized I didn't want, but for the most part almost everything has had some sort of merit to it. The one exception is way back in 2003 I think, when I paid for a set of Headphile.com "wooden cups" for the Sennheiser HD600/HD650 headphones. The were nicely finished from a pretty figured maple, but the shape was awkward and crude, and wow - acoustically it was an epic fail. Sennheisers are normally wonderfully open and non-fatiguing, and this "mod" killed every bit of that without adding any advantages. Hey, I even found an image! But only of the actual cups, not mounted on the Sennheiser:
 Dis-honorable mentions to: Sunfire Signature 600 II - My least favorite amp of all that I owned, just did not like the sound, at all. My first and last Carver product, ever. Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Reference Monitors - Again, I just did not like the sound AT ALL. Strange, because I really liked the Tyler Taylo Reference monitors before these.
