Why 4K is Stupid...

Like any other technological step forward we are discussing it now, but once we have it we will wonder how we ever managed to live without it.
Personally I want 4K to happen as fast as possible. Several reason for it.
First I actually think it very noticeable even on a 50" monitor, but for projectors and future 80-90" LEDs, LCDs and plasma it will be a must have.
It will also provide a better resolution, actually a much needed improvement, for 3D viewing were right now you only get half resolution pr eye.
Secondly it will drive the need for increases in connectivity speed for us all. There is no reason for the ISPs to be sitting on the bandwidth and try to tax us all or megabyte. If we all will be consuming movies from Netflix in 4K then hopefully that will kill that point of view.
Third - hopefully it will help to move the economy forward in this time of economic downturn..

Sorry, some of you will some of the points as irrelevant but I want my 4K or even better 8K as soon as possible..

This is what I find interesting ... we are a forum of audiophiles. We are constantly chasing higher fidelity. Some people argue that MP3 encoded at 256kbps is indistinguishable from CD, yet most of us would ignore them and go for the hi-res version. Why are we buying into the argument that "less is good enough" which is peddled by attention seekers all over the web? There are entire websites, blogs, and forums devoted to telling us that low-res is good enough, that a 1981 CD player is the ultimate sound reproduction tool, that all amplifiers sound the same, and that this assertion is supported by theory and blind tests. All of us know these people are fools.

I sat in on a SMPTE presentation this week (presented by Ericsson)
Very interesting update on proposed H.265 compression standard.

This technology dovetails nicely into 4k/Ultra HD even for OTA / Cable program delivery and streaming in 4k/Ultra HD

As presented, H.265 will provide roughly double the efficiency of H.264, and 4X over MPEG2. This would presumably allow UltraHD to home with NO added channel bandwidth requirements beyond current MPEG-2 "HD"

..and if you're Sony/Ericsson, who will surely build the H.265 Silicon, it could get you back in the "TV business".

They (not surprisingly) also provided evidence that 4k resolution on 50" ish + displays IS easily distinguishable and thus very worthwhile.

Soooo as I extrapolate and make things up to fit my own desires..... 4k H.265 is coming down the pike. Sony, via Blu-Ray & Playstation devices and their own H.265 chip sets in new Monitors for OTA will be pushing this big-time.

---Look; Ultra HD (4K) is more and more in all the Blu-ray players and AV receivers now (pre/pros too). Sony has a 4K projector, JVC two, ... Wolf, SIM2, Digital Projection, Runco; they are all into it
Sooo, like it or not, want it or not, it's comin' big time anyway.

And 3D with 4K content displayed on your Ultra HD screen will simply look awesome!

* By the way, about ten years ago it was already called 'Ultra HD'. ...There was an article about it in The Perfect Vision mag.

Also, do you know that with each improvement with picture quality (4K, 8K, 16K) all the Hollywood studios and HDTV, Blu-ray player, AV receiver, Pre/pro manufacturers are assured of a comfortable financial future? Yes, the movie 'Jaws' that you have on VHS, VHS Widescreen S.E., Beta tape, Laserdisc, Laserdisc Sp.Ed., DVD, DVD Sp.Ed., Blu-ray that just came out, you will be rebuying for the rest of your life to make sure Spielberg the director, and Universal Studios (FOX studios for 'Die Hard' flick), and all these manufacturers are cashing in for generations to come.
It is all their incentive to 'improve' life with better picture quality and source of income without limits.

They don't decide; technology decides! ...They just follow it like you follow the pig full of cash.
