Michael, do you have a tablet of some kind? If so, that makes the best control point. You'll still need an endpoint, some kind of streamer to feed your dac. Then in Doug's diagram your NAS replaces the SonicTransporter.

FYI, here's the Roon support page on using an NAS as the server:https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/...yone_want_this

Tony,

I don't have a tablet but can get one easily enough. Not sure whether to go iOS or Android at this point.

I can also get a streamer if needed but isn't that what the Raspberry pI does which is act as an endpoint for Roon? Or am I mistaken?

Maybe all I need to do is add Roon to a tablet and run it from there if I'm not mistaken about the function of the RPI in the signal path.

Thanks for the link!

Yes, I missed that you have a Pi. I don't know much about them but I understand a Pi can be the endpoint. You can't run the Roon core from a tablet, only the control app. You still need the NAS or some other computer-like device to run the core software.

Ok, well that makes sense.

I'd have to run the Roon Remote software from a tablet.

I can add RAM to the NAS and load Roon core there then?

I believe so, yes, but worth reading the Roon specs on it to be sure.

My reading history suggests it might be easier from the get-go to buy a dedicated ROOn Core machine of some sort (there are hundreds for all budgets) and skip trying to get your NAS to run ROON core. It is a rarity for it to work well.

I tend to agree, but if you’re trying to avoid further investment, it’s worth a shot.

After reading some info from Roon and more research into Synology NAS core capabilities, I am coming to the same conclusion.

My other choices are to cease using Roon, going to a tablet device and a streamer with app which I believes fills in all the requirements and releases me from being Windows dependent.

If you don't care about integrating with a streaming service like Tidal or Qobuz, you can always use Synology's built-in music server and their tablet app.

So that's an idea I had not considered as I did not know that was possible.

So I'd need some form of streamer or mini PC to make that work? Does Roon still play a role or am I going to be using something else as I would like to move on from Roon.

I know, I know....soooo many questions. I'm having a hard time figuring all this out obviously. I think the chemo treatments have scrambled my brain cells!
