Can you give some advise on the ethernet cables? I am looking at upgrading the Ethernet cables in my system and needsome help.

From the wall to my modem>router, then I run a 50 foot cat6 to my the theater room up stairs to a Ethernet splitter.

From the splitter I run a cat6 patch cable to my AppleTV, a patch cable to my Roon Nucleus+ and a patch cable to my MX170 theater processor.

I was thinking of putting a Ethernet cable between the router and modem down stairs, and what would you suggest from the splitter to the Apple TV, Roon, and Mx170?

Any Help on this would be greatly appreciated
HiFiHippie,
My take is that when you refer to an Ethernet splitter, you mean an Ethernet switch? If so, per your cabling scheme, depending on your budget I'd run Venom or Delta Ethernet cables from the switch to the Apple TV, Delta to the Roon Nucleus, and Delta or Alpha to the MX170. If you can afford Sigma at the destination end (the MX170). I'd go with that. If you have the budget for an UpTone Audio EtherREGEN Ethernet switch, I'd definitely recommend that.

Hope that helps.

Puma Cat, thanks for the input on the Ethernet cables. And it is a splitter that I am using upstairs. I was thinking of going with starting point of the Alpha series, but could do Sigma and possible Omega. The Apple TV is not used to much, but the Roon nucleus is what I stream all music, so I figured the Sigma or Omega would be the best choice.

As for MX170 the only reason I have a ethernet cable hooked up to it is for the networking IP address so I can use my IPad as a remote control. But I understand it is important to have a good ethernet cable noise issues, that can plague the rest of my components.

I also thought I could put one in between the modem and router downstairs, not sure if that is necessary or not.

Thanks again, for you help as it has really has made my system come to life, especially with addition of the power cables and the Everest.

Hifihippie,
Best bang for the buck/order:

1. Change ”ethernet splitter” to an Uptone Etherregen.
2. Connect Roon Nucleus on the A side with an Alpha Ethernet.
3. Connect your streaming endpoint (MX170??) on your Uptone ER’s B-side with Alpha, Sigma or Omega ethernet.
4. Get an optical-> rj45 converter down by your cable modem and pull up a 50 feet OM fiber cable and connect it to an optical SFP in your Uptone Etherregen.
5. Sigma CGC ground cable to your Everest from the Uptone ER.
6. Connect an external 10MHz clock to the Uptone Etherregen

You don’t have to do all at once. But every one of these changes will upgrade your system sound.

Bingo. Exactly what my reco would be for an optimal setup. Those changes would bring a bring a sizable improvement.

crion2, thanks for helping me out with the ethernet suggestion. I wanted to clarify one thing in my setup, the MX170 theater processor is not my end point for my 2 channel listening. I use McIntosh C53 preamplifier(this device does not offer a Ethernet connection) and I use it for my turntable and a McIntosh MCT500 transport for my cd/sacd playback. The device that requires a ethernet connection is my Roon Nucleus+ connected via Sigma USB, which is used to stream Qubuz and Tidal to my C53 preamplifier. The Mx170 processor is only used from movies and multichannel audio(sacd) via a HDMI. So the MX170 input ethernet connection is for a IP address so I can use my Ipad as remote control for various settings . The other ethernet connection is my AppleTV. Which gives me a total of three ethernet cables connections up stairs currently used through a ethernet splitter.

So in the order of your numbers:

1. I went to Uptone Audio to order the EtherRegen and the next available looks like it will be in March.

2. Connect Roon Nucleus+ to C53 preamp endpoint via Sigma USB(which I plan upgrading to Omega USB.(ethernet B side?)

3. Connect MX170 via ethernet(Alpha or Sigma) through which input on the EtherRegen input?

4.Optical-RJ45 converter from modem and run a 50 foot fiber cable to Uptone EtherRegen.

5.Shunyata Research Sigma CGC ground to Everest.

6. External 10 MHz clock, I did some research and it seems that Mutec REF-10 is used a lot. Do you have a recommendation?

Once again I really appreciate all the support from the forum members, it truly has transformed my system to another level of performance.

Ahh, your Nucleus+ is both core and streamer in your setup and C53 is the DAC.
Then you really don’t need a fine ethernet to the MX170.

Just connect the Nucleus with your best ethernet you have on your B side of Uptone ER.

As for clocks I actually recommend a cheap 100$ 10MHz square OCXO clock to start with. I’ll get the link later. The type of improvement should tell you if it might be worth investing in a 30-40 times more expensive clock later.. Still it will shine with an Alpha v2 clock 75. I actually haven’t gotten around to upgrade the clock more but I can testify it being unbelivably cheap for the improvement it brings.

I'd be really interested in what you recommend for an OCXO clock, as well.

This inexpensive 10MHz squarewave OCXO works perfectly with Uptone EtherRegen and Shunyata Alpha V2 Clock 75 (BNC).

I set a Shunyata CGS10 ground cable from one of the clock's chassi screws to the Denali as well. I use a HDPLEX 300W LPSU to power the ER and Clock.
