Default There is one thing that always bothered me...
There is this one particular thing that has always bothered me... Just can't seem to get it out of my mind. Perhaps someone can help me overcome it!

Here goes.... Why does the Earth look about the size of the Moon proportionally speaking when this Apollo picture was taken??

We all know the appearance of the size of the moon from Earth. Keeping in mind that the Earth is 4x bigger, should it not have appeared 4x bigger from the surface of the Moon from the astronaut's perspective???

How can this be???

Now, just for "scale reference" imagine you are an astronaut on the Moon. What should you see from the surface of the moon???

Jim, that is obvious.

You have to think in terms of "proportion" though. If the moon is 4x smaller and you know what it looks like in the sky but an object that is 400% bigger (earth) should NOT look as small from the surface of the moon!

Imagine a watermelon and an orange next to each other... You are small enough to stand on top of watermelon and you see the orange. Good, now move to the orange and look at the watermelon. Proportionally speaking the watermelon will be MUCH bigger than the orange was from the watermelon. Perspective!
