Nice thread, I’m late little Kevin is taking most of my time now. As per Nakamichi 1000ZXL Gold, only a few were made, parts were handpicked, better electronics, you get the picture. Is it worth 13k sonically, no you can get a black face 1000ZXL send it to ES Labs for overhaul and should be better than new in the neighbor hood of 7k total. The King of the hill is the Dragon and yes some my trash it and say is not the best and that CR-7A and ZX-9 are better and the 1000ZXL is superior, but is not. I've done comparison with CR-7A and ZX9, and Dragon and yes I had them all overhaul by Es Labs, and to me the Dragon is the best. I also I got discourage in buying a 1000 ZXL by experts and they all agree the Dragon is the best sounding deck as it has newer technology and better electronics. I had a Studer A810 and recorded awesome and playback was incredible and I can say a perfect working Dragon like mine is the same and better in some areas. I got to say that an EBay, Gon, etc Dragon needs work. A Dragon is a complex machine but when overhaul and well tune is hard to beat. So assume that you get one that is in mint shape for 1000 or so, your next move is to send it to ESL and get an overhaul for 2500.00 or so, or call them see if they have one for sale. Now make sure you send them a tape you will like for them to calibrate and you are ready to rock. Oh yeah I forgot the part of hunting for quality Super Tapes, will cost you an arm and a leg.
