Seperating Reference from "Reference"
So pretty much any manufacturer can slap the term reference on any product they create.. Cables, amps, racks, etc. What do you think makes a piece of equipment, cable, or furniture Reference?

I don't think it's much different than Flagship or Premier.

I don't consider reference to state a certain level of quality, but rather a standard that a particular manufacturer decides to compare all their products against, or a reviewer to review all products against.
I look at it this way... If you drive a BMW 318 everyday, this could be considered your reference vehicle, so everything you drive after that is compared to the BMW, whether it be a Toyota or a Ferrari. Most people are under the impression that reference means top of the line... It does not... It is a product line to set a bench mark for comparison... IMO

Yes, Reference does mean a certain level of quality but not necessarily the best. You often hear reviewers say that a certain speaker or piece of gear was actually better than their Reference system.

Isn't that what I said?....

and.... Reference can only last until something new and better comes along and beats the pants off of it... it's really a matter of perspective... and preference...

Reference = benchmark. Today, marketing pressures have dumbed the word down. A benchmark should stand the test of time, not be superceded every three months.
