Long-range Wi-Fi Access Point
I need a Wi-Fi access point that can reach a security camera located about 20p-250 feet from my house with a strong enough signal for 1080p video. I currently have a Synology mesh system, which does a great job covering the house and, with an extra AP on the 2nd floor, actually gets a signal to the camera, but only enough for pretty low-res video. Does anyone have any experience with APs with that kind of reach? It could be located inside the house with plug-in power, or I could place it on the outside of the house using PoE. I’m not interested in a whole new system, just an AP that can connect to my current router via Ethernet.
Thanks for any suggestions.

TP-Link CPE 510
POE, mounts outside No personal experience with it. I’ll have the same situation shortly with an outbuilding we are planning.

Is there somewhere, somehow you can add a mesh node outside of the house toward the camera? It wouldn’t need to be halfway or anything. I would think if you can get it 20 feet or more from your house toward the camera you eliminate a lot of interference and that may get you to what you need plus giving you wifi when you are outside. If if doesn’t have to cross driveways or things like that you may just be better off by running an Ethernet wire from the house to the camera. A lawn maintenance guy with an edger can give you a 6inch deep trench (unless you are on very shallow solid rock) in about 30 minutes. I used this technique to run invisible fence wire in a prior residence when my financial situation, while nothing to sneeze at (but with 2 children in private school), required me to be the family Bob Vila. I just spray painted the line on the lawn and ground where I wanted the wires to go, my (Cuban) wife translated what I needed to the landscaper, and a $20 tip to the guy who actually did it.

Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately it’s not practical to put a node any closer, and running Ethernet isn’t practical either - too many obstacles and I want to be able to move the camera occasionally. The camera isn’t for security, it’s for wildlife so I can get a live feed with video recording.

Thanks Tom. I’ve been looking at this one on Amazon, but the reviews are a mixed bag. It’s cheap enough though, so I may give it a shot.

That’s what I thought - but it, try it, and keep it if it works. I’ve found reviews of techie stuff to be hit and miss.
