Once I entered the digital darkroom era, from raw to the finished image, I saw no reason to keep my trusty old Nikon F3 and gave it and accessories to Goodwill Industries a few years ago. I DO miss the odors of developer, stop bath and hypo but no longer have to cut out shapes in cardboard or twist my hands between the enlarger lens and paper to hold back part of an image and then wait for the finished image to pop out -- what I see on the screen IS what appears on the finished print -- soooooooooo much easier with more capabilities at touching up the image whether in raw or in PS.

I guess I'm a late convert to digital, but with bracketing for HDR on my D7000, I'm getting pretty good results with digital now.

I loved shooting Velvia too. I never set up a darkroom even though a friend gave me a lot of his stuff. I did use a local lab for some Cibachrome prints.

I too miss the simplicity and connectedness of "set, focus, shoot" - could be why I still have vinyl.

Maybe this isn't possible with the variability in sensors, but it would be nice to have settings like "Velvia" and "Kodachrome" rather than, say, "Dynamic" with +/- settings from there. Ditto for B&W of course.

But maybe all that is possible with darkroom software, like Phase One and the like ?

i've found film capture (large format) and digital print making to yield the best of both worlds. though digital capture is getting VERY good recently.

I only have 1 film camera with a few lenses. This was the camera I learned how to take photos. I'm keeping it as a memory.

John,
Here is an example of an unedited landscape from my D7000 with what I call "Velvia Mode" You can do a lot in-camera, and post processing it will take it further. - Tom

I actually prefer film over digital. I use a Nikon F100 and for a Holga 135BC. To me it is very much the same as vinyl over digital

For digital I use a Nikon D7000.

Default Film:Digital :: Vinyl:CD

Joe,
I'd never heard of a Holga before - very cool. Thanks for turning me on to them. The D100 is one of the best cameras Nikon ever made.

You're right, there are a lot of parallels between film and digital imaging. Or between a digital projector and a CRT projector for home theater. I have to use multiple exposure HDR to get the dynamic range with my D7000 that I can get with film.

Since I sold my darkroom setup, I now scan everything and manipulate it in Photoshop and then have it professionally ink-jet printed. I think I'm getting better results in this manner. I do miss the quiet hours in the darkroom, though.

Tom

You should definitely play around with the Holga for less than $50 it is a lot of fun. Hipstomatic and instagram photo apps on your phone are designed to get the effect of a holga or a plastic lens camera.

I sold my last film cameras some 4-5 years ago. Did not worth much anymore except two Ricoh GR1's and a Contax T3, all of which were sold at eBay with some profits. I still love these excellent compact cameras, and the pictures I have taken with them. But I could not imagine going back to film anymore.
