Henry.......No, the first McIntosh receiver with a CD input was the MAC4200, followed by the MAC4275, MAC4280, and the MAC 4300V.

Thanks for sharing Dan.
Alberto.......Ah, yes. That wonderful McIntosh variable loudness compensation control, plus the five band EQ. McIntosh was thinking when they designed this receiver. In addition to that, the MAC4300V also includes Sentry Monitor, Power Guard, and temperature monitoring of the output stages. This is one sweet McIntosh receiver. I hope you manage to find one. I am positive you will appreciate it.

Here is another photo of the MAC4300V with a Nakamichi CR-7A cassette deck stacked on top. This is when I had the receiver in the living room system for awhile.

Another 4300V owner here. I am the second owner of this fine piece of equipment. This pic is a few years old - it is now in my main system as a tuner. Works great.

Tom.......Using the MAC4300V as a tuner is unique. It actually goes to show the versatility of this fine receiver. It can be used as a preamp/tuner, tuner only, preamp only, or power amp only, as well as a full featured receiver. Once you own the 4300V it can be difficult to take it out of service in one way or another.

Dan,
In the same setup I also run the 4300V as an equalizer. I put it in the record monitor loop of the C500T, so when the need arises, I can use its 5 band equalizer section to tame a bad recording. Very versatile indeed!

Once again Dan we are right on the same page there. I've also been keeping my eyes skinned for a minty MAC 4100 even though I really don't need one.

Then again, what difference does that make!

**Orson Welles evidently agreed.

That's a beauty! I've wanted one for a long time. I got a MAC4280 on ebay about a year ago for my daughter and it looks great, but it has issues. I found out that although the 4280 was designed by McIntosh the guts of it were made in Japan. Based on that, I had overpaid. Sometimes one channel goes out in a way that indicates a bad transistor somewhere. Cycling the power temporarily gets it going again. The balance control doesn't work properly and neither do the tone controls (indicating what strikes me as a broken solder joint ). According to McIntosh the 4280 failure rate is no worse than any other Mac unit.

The intermittent channel problem is likely due to a fault with the internal jumpers between the preamplifier and main amplifier sections. Installing an interconnect between the two usually will not correct the problem, sad to say. Will probably need a lap through one of the Mc doctors.

Not the "worst" receivers ever made but the 4275/4280 were definitely not the units of the MAC xx00 series and cannot drive 2 ohm, unlike their bigger brothers.

Eric.......I found it noteworthy that Orson supposedly turned the MAC4100 volume down using the input selector. The average bear might not have caught that but it clearly doesn't pass Mac muster.
