Vinyl is capable of better fidelity than I first thought.

There is an undeniable coolness about playing an LP and likely deep satisfaction when all the effort results in a first-rate playback experience, but the learning curve looks steep. Worth it?

To answer your question, yes. I started my journey just prior to 2020.

I reviewed, read, listened and then committed.

What I originally thought it would take as a financial commitment to go forward was significantly reduced, and placing a first step table in service while my turntable is being built made me think why I didn’t do this earlier. For under $1000, you can enjoy the experience and from there escalate if only you deem its worth it.

I won’t argue which is better, as IMO there’s no need to, it all comes down to the recording.

Having options allows better choices.

Knowing firsthand the commitment and cost it takes for vinyl to best digital playback no I would not start from ground zero at this point in my life. But I'm also glad I did not feel this way a couple decades ago with vinyl being my preferred format now.

I would suggest the opposite. Vinyl sounds better than digital in dollar to dollar comparison. In order to achieve high fidelity IN THE AREAS I DEEM IMPORTANT (tonality, PRAT, musical ease) digitally takes tremendous financial resources. I find these are available at low price in vinyl.

That said, it costs more to achieve other high end results in vinyl than in digital (noise reduction, bass extension, speed stability).

They are 2 different animals. One is not inherently better , they both get ungodly expensive in the stratosphere and I can easily understand someone else valuing digital’s strengths over vinyl and vice versa.

Buyers remorse to the max. I went with superb equipment that was very pricy and now I’m not sure what to do next. I want to sell my turntable, cartridge, and phono-stage and go digital. The quality of the bulk of vinyl I have bought is not good. It is so noisy, full of pops and crackles. I have cleaned the records on a pro-ject machine, I’ve used cleaning/static brushes, it doesn’t matter, seeems to be inherit in the pressing. The only vinyl I have that isn’t this way is from MFSL, the rest varies. Some is so bad I can’t even listen to it as the noise is equal to that of the recording.

What kind of loss can I expect on a VPI Prime Signature, SoundSmith Zephyr MKIII, Manley Chinook? I don’t see a section on this board to list equipment, any recommendations?

Thanks for reading.

I responded to your post earlier and reading it back I wish to apologize for my insensitive response.
I hope you will allow me to try again.

I am really sorry to hear that you have not achieved the level of enjoyment with vinyl you were expecting. I know all too well what it’s like to jump in with both feet (in this hobby and others) and realize what a poor choice I had made.
If you are not able to get your vinyl rig up to speed I can understand why you would wish to move on. I found that I stopped listening to digital entirely when I got vinyl and sold my Aesthetix Romulus. I still have the 1,000 or so discs I collected but never listen to anymore.

Wishing you happy listening in the future.

I absolutely agree. It is all about the music. With digital I have millions of tunes to "listen to". With a proper vinyl set up I have 100 000 of songs to be "touched by".

I run CD and Vinyl side by side. The digital is perfect when I'm in the kitchen cooking. Vinyl only makes a difference when I am sitting in sweet spot and ready to be swept away (pops and clicks included :-).
