David,

I have seen LED projectors many times, and have elementary impressions of them. It may sound like a copout, but I advise anyone who is interested in them to look for themselves and see if they prefer the image . . . for some of the following reasons . . .

1) While I prefer the image of a DLP projector to a DILA or SXRD type projector, I am sensitive to a color wheel, and thus have tended to migrate to the latter. The Sim2 LED projectors I have seen use a red, green, and blue LED, so they don't need a color wheel. This makes LED technology ideal for me.

2) Also, not look at the lumen specs of the LED projectors, because they dont tell the whole story. The light that is output from an LED projector "looks" different than the light that is output by a bulb based unit. THe light "looks" brighter, though it does not measure brighter. I am not sure why, but DLP projectors are brighter than their lumens measure.

3) It is very attractive for the LEDs to last 30k hrs plus, with only a few percent dimming over their life, as opposed to a bulb which dims as much as 30% relatively soon in its life.

4) Assumedly, a LED projector would not be a heater for your room either. I saw a Digital Projection DLP have to have a custom venting solution installed because it put out so much heat, but it was replaced by a Sim2 Mico 150, which does not require the same level of ventilation.

Hope this helps . . . let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Tim

more than likely is the color temp

LED will probably be around 5000k naturally (more blue push) but not as blue as say a true 6500k LED.

The other bulbs might be around 4200k. that is significantly more yellowing.

Thanks for your responses I thought this thread died weeks ago. I am in the market for a new projector, not that I have any problems with mine but it is 7 years old and only does 720 P.

Not sure about that. The 3 LEDs are red green and blue, so it is not a single source of light like a bulb, and can be calibrated to any temp desired. I know Ivan prefers his 3 gun CRT to any bulb based projector.

What I mean is that if a LED and bulb based projector are both calibrated to the same specs, the LED looks different, apart from temp, contrast, etc . . .. It may be the bulb is warmer, and there is nothing that can be done to remove the warmth, even with a calibration.

Sort of off topic, but not totally...

I have an older Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 720 which is 3LCD, not LED. But my point is, even at 720p on my 100" screen, the image looks every bit as sharp and smooth as any 1080p projector I've seen, which is why I went with the 720. And I only sit roughly 12' away from the screen. I couldn't see spending the extra $500-600 at the time for a marginal improvement.

Now, maybe if you're shooting onto a 120"+ screen, the extra resolution might help. But at 100" or so, I doubt you'll see much if any improvement.

On topic, LED projectors are getting to be more and more common now, and at 30k+ hours, it's a very nice thing. I'm still running off of the original bulb at just over 3k hours, and that's over a 5 year period. I still have the second bulb in the cabinet below the projector!

Was there any particular projector you were looking at? Any particular price range?
